Verity Executive Dr. Prabhakar Raghavan to Speak at MIT's Dertouzos Lecturer Series
Verity CTO to Discuss "Mining Social Networks for Knowledge Management”
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2002-04-01 - Verity, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers corporate portals and e-commerce sites as well as e-business applications, today announced that vice president and chief technology officer Dr. Prabhakar Raghavan will speak at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as part of its Dertouzos Lecturer Series. Sponsored by MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS), the presentation will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2002.
"Dr. Raghavan's presentation gives the MIT community a remarkable opportunity to hear from one of the foremost experts in knowledge management and social networks, whose work has helped propel Verity into its leadership position in business portal infrastructure software," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president. "He has been instrumental in developing Verity's vision of social networks and advanced capabilities such as automatic classification."
In his presentation, entitled "Mining Social Networks for Knowledge Management," Dr. Raghavan will discuss how research in knowledge management has identified social networks as a means of improving web search through link analysis, and connecting people to expertise. He will review this research, present some recent results on modeling power law behavior in social networks and argue that extended social networks are a powerful basis for knowledge management.
"The LCS Distinguished Lecture Series has been an LCS tradition since 1976. It has featured some of the most influential thinkers in computer science, including Bill Gates, Steven Jobs, Donald Knuth, John McCarthy, and Mitchell Kapor," says Professor Victor Zue, Director of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science. "The series has been renamed this year as the Dertouzos Lecture Series in memory of our former director, Michael Dertouzos. We are pleased that Dr. Raghavan is one of the four inaugural speakers for this series under its new name."
In addition to his role at Verity, Dr. Raghavan is consulting professor of computer science at Stanford University, and has also taught at Yale. He has authored over 100 papers in various fields including algorithms, optimization, web search and databases. He serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious scientific journals including the Journal of the ACM, the SIAM Journal on Computing and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Transactions on Internet Technology. Dr. Raghavan is a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE.
Dr. Raghavan's lecture will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2002, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Building 34, Room 101, 50 Vassar Street in Cambridge, Mass. Admission is free and open to the public.
