Channel 4 Selects Autonomy For News Portal

CAMBRIDGE, England, 5 March, 2002 -- Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU., Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that Channel 4 Television Corp. and 4Ventures Ltd. has selected its technology for use within the recently re-launched Website, (www.channel4.com) under which Channel4 is consolidating all content into a "supersite" for easier navigation and promotion of the Channel's extensive online information. Autonomy will automate information operations by aggregating, hyper- linking related content and articles and delivering information from multiple verticals including breaking news, sports, entertainment, culture, history, science, learning, life and films.

Autonomy's infrastructure software will serve Channel4.com's information-rich Website and automatically process thousands of articles from disparate sources, inserting the relevant hypertext links between them. In addition, Autonomy's technology will provide a much richer user experience, by allowing site visitors to use natural language to describe the topics they are interested in and by automatically suggesting related content on the site.

According to Peter Pedersen, chief technology officer of Channel4's commercial arm, 4Ventures, Autonomy will help make the site easier to navigate without requiring additional manual work. "Autonomy's technology will automatically hyperlink breaking news articles, new sports results, new entertainment listings in real-time with existing content on the site," said Pedersen.

Because Autonomy's technology inserts hypertext links automatically at the time of retrieval, the links are always kept up to date and can even point the visitor to more recent information. For example, a visitor reading a special report on family vacation spots for the summer holiday season, will automatically get a link to a brand new article about the Euro and its impact on travelling.

Richard Gaunt, chief technology officer and co-founder of Autonomy, commented, "Channel 4 provides a rich mixture of content for a wide audience. We look forward to providing the infrastructure and easy-to-use tools that will allow each site visitor to drill down into his or personal interests."

Autonomy has had great success in providing infrastructure for news portals throughout the world. Channel 4 joins other Autonomy media customers throughout Europe and the United States including the BBC, SF Gate, Seattle Times, Boston Herald, and Reuters.

Autonomy's infrastructure technology automatically integrates information from multiple sources such as news feeds, internal sources, the Web through an understanding of concepts within the content. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It then automatically categorizes, links, personalizes and delivers that information.
