Autonomy Moves Into 3G Market With First Customer, Hutchison 3G
Autonomy to Automate Aggregation and Delivery of Content In Multiple Consumer Portals Within Mobile Services Network in Europe and Asia
CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom - 28 February, 2002 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU., Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced a strategic new sector for its technology, third generation wireless communication (3G), and marked its foray into this strong market with a significant new customer. Hutchison 3G, holder of many of the world's largest third generation mobile phone licences, has selected Autonomy's infrastructure technology for the development of its new 3G network throughout Europe and Asia.
Autonomy has a unique infrastructure technology that automates operations on unstructured, semi-structured and structured information and can be applied to a wide range of applications regardless of the industry. The Hutchison deployment reflects the culmination of Autonomy's extensive research and development efforts in 3G wireless communication standards.
Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) and interface Portal-in-a-Box, will enable Hutchison to classify and deliver unique, location-specific information from hundreds of sources, including live news, e-commerce, sport and entertainment, such as music-on-demand. The software will improve the consumer experience, ensuring that navigations present the most accurate information at the right time, through the right channels and in the most user-friendly format.
Employing Autonomy's technology, Hutchison 3G will minimize traditional labour and maintenance overheads associated with information processing to provide consumers with a single entry point from their mobile and handheld devices to its robust, vibrant network. With a strong commitment to Autonomy's unique infrastructure for 3G wireless communication networks, initial deployments will occur in the United Kingdom and Italy, with future rollouts scheduled for Austria, Sweden, Hong Kong and Australia.
According to Colin Tucker, Managing Director, Hutchison 3G, Autonomy's infrastructure software was selected because of its unique ability to integrate unstructured, semi-structured and structured information in multiple languages and formats: "As the amount and type of data supported by the 3G network increases, we needed a scaleable solution," said Tucker.
"Due to the display and bandwidth requirements of mobile phones and handheld devices, Hutchison 3G needed a solution that could deliver highly relevant information in real-time to their subscribers," said Dr. Mike Lynch, CEO and co-founder of Autonomy. "Autonomy will provide a scaleable infrastructure that automatically links related information as it becomes available."
"3G is a significant market opportunity for Autonomy," commented Lynch. "Hutchison 3G is pioneering the next generation of mobile communications and Autonomy is pleased to support this revolutionary network."
About Hutchison 3G
Hutchison 3G UK Ltd. ("Hutchison 3G") holds licence 'A' (a third-generation mobile licence), which was issued by the UK government in May 2000. This licence was for the largest block of spectrum auctioned in the UK, as it was set-aside for a new entrant to the market. The licence consists of 15MHz of paired spectrum, and 5MHz of unpaired spectrum.
3G is a convergence of media, information and telephony which promises to change people's lives by enabling them to access information on the move when, where and how they want. The 3G standard (agreed throughout Europe, Japan, China, and the rest of Asia) is formally known as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). It represents a global standard for third generation mobile communication systems and is at the heart of the Hutchison 3G initiative.
Hutchison Whampoa Limited holds a 65 per cent stake in Hutchison 3G, the other major shareholders are NTT DoCoMo (20 per cent) KPN Mobile (15 per cent).
