SAN MATEO, Calif. - February 19, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], today announced a new enterprise application for rich media training and e-learning. VS Learning™ enables companies to create, manage, publish and view on-demand training courses and presentations containing video and other rich media information. The solution is available from Virage both as a licensed software product and as a hosted service. Virage is a leading provider of video and rich media communication software.
"This is a good strategic move for Virage," said Charles Luce, Delphi Group Senior Analyst. "The ability to easily handle rich media file types is a key enabler of sophisticated enterprise e-learning applications. And in the bigger picture, VS Learning-as well as the recent VS Publishing™ and VS Webcasting™-are fine examples of streaming technology products that are driven by specific business needs."
With VS Learning, content authors can create their own course materials using any of 48 customizable browser-based templates that offer a variety of layouts, frame sizes and supported data formats. All rich media assets and templates used to create courses are stored and managed centrally, allowing sharing and repurposing of course materials and templates and providing improved security for sensitive corporate information. Course authoring is done via a web browser through either a wizard for beginners or a series of menus for power-users, making VS Learning the easiest product available for creating professional quality rich media training and presentation materials. Authored courses are also stored and distributed via the server, ensuring controlled distribution of courses and presentations. VS Learning supports both the Microsoft and RealNetworks' streaming formats as well as Macromedia Flash™, MS Office® files, and Adobe Acrobat®.
"Training and e-learning are break-out applications for streaming media in corporations today," said Dave Girouard, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Strategy for Virage. "The economic justification for delivering training material online is clear and powerful. But until today, the industry has lacked an enterprise-scale software solution that is both powerful and secure yet simple and intuitive for content authors and learners. VS Learning provides employees with simple and fast access to critical rich media training-anywhere and anytime it's needed."
Courses authored using VS Learning can include streaming video and audio (including Microsoft's Windows Media and RealNetworks' Real Media) in a variety of sizes and encoding rates. The audio and video is automatically synchronized with PowerPoint slides, transcripts, or other images. The author can then attach audio, HTML pages, PDF files and any Microsoft Office document to create compelling, rich media training materials for learners. VS Learning provides the capability to distribute the training courses in a controlled fashion via the corporate intranet or package the courses for delivery on a CD or DVD. Utilizing the power of VS Learning, registered learners can search the course catalog as well as within an individual course for the specific training content needed.
Support For Industry Standards
VS Learning provides password-protected course distribution to selected groups of employees based on the Light-Weight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) standard. In addition, VS Learning also creates industry-standard learning objects for learning management systems (LMS). By supporting the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM)-an industry standard that defines a Web-based learning content model-any Virage-authored course easily integrates into a compliant LMS.
VS Learning is based on the Virage rich media application platform, which includes the company's award-winning SmartEncode™ products and Virage Solution Server™. In December, Virage also announced VS Webcasting, a software solution for producing and managing live and on-demand webcasts and VS Publishing, a solution for automated rich media web publishing. With the introduction of VS Learning, Virage now brings its proven platform to the learning and training arena.
