Virage Announces Next Generation Server for Enterprise Rich-Media Applications
SAN MATEO, California - February 13, 2002 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], today announced the release of the Virage Solution Server™ 4.0, the latest generation of its rich-media server. The new server includes best-of-breed search technology from Verity and now supports a wide range of data formats including images and documents. Virage is a leading provider of enterprise rich-media application software.
"The release of the new server strengthens Virage's solutions significantly," said Paul Ritter, an enterprise-streaming analyst at the Yankee Group. "More corporations are using streaming media for mission-critical applications such as corporate communications, employee training, and marketing. The Virage platform and packaged solutions for webcasting and publishing provide companies with a capability to improve efficiency by developing and managing rich-media applications. These applications support video as well as the wide range of other data types that almost every corporation uses today."
The Virage Solution Server incorporates Verity's new K2 Developer tools. By adding Verity's latest search technology, the new server provides improved search capability and gives customers greater efficiency and scalability in managing large repositories of video, audio, images and text. This new version allows organizations to better implement mission-critical applications such as corporate communications, training and security.
"The Virage Solution Server provides us with an integrated platform on which to build end-to-end solutions for more complex video-based applications," said Joe Gordon, CEO of Leading Edge Design Systems, a certified Virage systems integrator. "With Virage Solution Server and the Virage SmartEncode™ family of products, we can now work with one product suite and build systems for our government and corporate customers who work primarily with video content and also need to manage related media, such as text and images."
Virage Solution Server 4.0 comes with a complete set of developer tools for third parties to develop their own customized solutions. Integrators or customers, for example, can build customized reporting tools and create highly personalized end-user experiences. The latest server version strengthens Virage's powerful rich-media application software platform, which includes the company's SmartEncode™ family of products and the Virage Solution Server 4.0.
"Just last quarter, we introduced user management, folders, and playlists into our server platform," said Dave Girouard, senior vice president of marketing and corporate strategy for Virage. "This quarter, we're adding the world's best search technology, support for a wide array of image and document types, and significantly improved scalability and reliability. We're happy to say that all Virage solutions will benefit enormously from the improvements we've made to our core server platform."
Virage Solution Server 4.0 also comes with improved security capabilities, allowing customers to better integrate with their existing network security infrastructure and protect their valuable corporate assets.
New search features include stemming, thesaurus search, and improved support for non-Latin languages like Chinese and Japanese. In addition to commercially available streaming video formats, Virage Solution Server 4.0 also supports other document types including ASCII, MS Excel, MS Word, Microsoft Works, MS PowerPoint, Word Perfect, HTML, Unicode, Rich Text (.rtf), GIF, JPEG, and many others.
