Autonomy Listed As A Leader In The Magic Quadrant For Enterprise Search
IT Research Firm Cites Autonomy's Vision and Ability to Execute
CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, 13 February, 2002 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that Gartner, Inc., an independent research firm, has listed Autonomy as a leader in the Gartner 2002 Enterprise Search Magic Quadrant.*
"Although search is a smaller piece of Autonomy's intelligent data operating layer (IDOL) for most of our customers, we are pleased to see Gartner citing us as a leader in information retrieval and a company that has satisfied advanced customer requirements in addition to building successful OEM partnerships," said Richard Gaunt, chief technology officer and co-founder of Autonomy. "The report compliments our vision and establishes Autonomy's holistic approach to handling unstructured information, confirming us as providing a platform that underpins a wide spectrum of applications of which portals is just one."
Autonomy integrates information from multiple repositories through an understanding of the content. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, personalizes and delivers that information. The technology is used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, business intelligence, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.

Caution Concerning Forward-Looking Statements
With the exception of historical information, the matters set forth in this news release are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties. A number of important factors could cause actual results to differ materially from those in the forward-looking statements. These factors include, among others, technology risks, including dependence on core technology; fluctuations in quarterly results; dependence on new product development; rapid technological and market change; reliance on sales by others; management of growth; dependence on key personnel; rapid expansion; growth of the Internet; financial risk management; and future growth subject to risks. These factors and other factors which could cause actual results to differ materially are also discussed in the company's filings with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, including Autonomy's Annual Report on Form 20-F and Registration Statements on Form F-1.

Gartner's permission to print or reference its Magic Quadrant should not be deemed to be an endorsement of any company or product depicted in the quadrant. The Magic Quadrant is Gartner's opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner-defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the Leaders segment. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player segments may be the right match for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant. Gartner research is intended to be one of many information sources and the reader should not rely solely on the Magic Quadrant for decision-making.
