Verity's Advanced Portal Infrastructure Software Boosts Efficiency of ACM Portal

Users of the Portal's Digital Library and Online Guide experience fast and accurate results on complex searches

SUNNYVALE, CA - 2002-01-08 - Members of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), the world's largest scientific and computing organization, now have a faster, easier way to research nearly a half-million scientific articles and citations. Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software powering enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, today announced that ACM, a society of computing professionals, researchers, students and technology enthusiasts, has improved the organization and retrieval of vast amounts of technical content in its ACM Portal with the help of Verityâ K2 Catalog software. As a result, ACM's 75,000 members and other users now have faster, more accurate access to massive libraries of scientific information.

"Since ACM installed Verity's K2 Catalog software, ACM Portal users have raved about almost instantaneous response times on even the most complex searches," said Wayne Graves, ACM's director of information services. "They are now able to execute elaborate queries across both the full texts from the Portal's Digital Library as well as vast bibliographic sources from books, journals, proceedings and theses included in the Portal's ACM Guide."

Verity's K2 Catalog is portal infrastructure software that allows organizations to perform advanced search, categorization and classification tasks across external-facing portals. The ACM Digital Library and ACM Guide - destinations on the ACM Portal - give members access to full-text journal and magazine articles as well as citations to third-party computer science literature and text from conference proceedings. Ninety-five percent of the articles are in PDF format, making text search difficult or impossible for many vendor products. For the first time, Verity K2 Catalog allows more precise full-text searches across this type of data residing in the ACM Portal. Verity K2 Catalog accesses documents created in other formats, as well, including HTML and Postscript.

Verity K2 Catalog's brokered architecture allows a greater volume of search without degradation in performance; ACM's previous search software could handle only limited transactions before slowing down. "The difference with Verity is like night and day," said ACM's Graves. "The ACM Portal currently hosts 1500 to 2000 sessions at peak times, with five or six complex searches occurring during each session. That was not possible before Verity."

Other benefits to ACM Portal users include Verity K2 Catalog's fault-tolerant operation, which distributes queries evenly across multiple servers so that no one server is ever overloaded with requests, and "fuzzy search," a feature that helps users find content in spite of misspelled search terms.

Our relationship with ACM is a solid example of Verity's expertise at turning vast amounts of disparate data into useful information," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, president of Verity. "Software developers, computer engineers, students and others use the ACM Portal to find the latest industry news or to conduct research critical to their needs. Verity delivers that information quickly and accurately so that users can spend more time generating ideas instead of waiting for query results or sorting through irrelevant data."
