Autonomy Powered Portal For United States Army Receives CIO Web Business 50 Award™

Information Portal Lauded for Web Design and Easy User Interface

San Francisco, CA -December 3, 2001- Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the United States Army's information portal, Army Knowledge Online (AKO), has been honored as a winner of the prestigious CIO Web Business 50 Award from IDG's CIO magazine. The 5th annual CIO Web Business 50 Award honors 50 outstanding web sites across business, government and non-profit platforms.

"The World Wide Web is a crowded marketplace, but winners of the CIO Web Business 50 Award are a step above other sites," says Abbie Lundberg, editor-in-chief, CIO magazine. "Winning sites have combined excellence in design and functionality to create a top notch experience for their consumers, business partners and other users."

AKO is a key initiative in the transformation of the institutional Army into a true knowledge and capabilities-based organization. Using technology from Autonomy, AKO assists in the production of higher quality products, recommendations and decisions by providing the Army with Web-based tools that allow individuals to spend more time analyzing, not collecting information.

"Army Knowledge Online currently supports more than 700,000 registered users worldwide," said Colonel Robert Coxe. "By creating an online portal where critical information can be accessed-from personalized reports used to track information, documents by colleagues on relevant matters, training links, the latest Army news and other knowledge centers-all from a single interface, we are producing a more efficient and productive environment. CIO magazine's recognition of our online portal and the efficiencies it brings to our global users represents an important milestone for our online initiative."

As part of the AKO technology development, the U.S. Army deployed Autonomy's infrastructure technology. Autonomy integrates information from multiple repositories through an understanding of the underlying meaning of content allowing soldiers to share knowledge and work more effectively across the Web. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze voice and text (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It then automatically categorizes, links, personalizes and delivers that information.

"Autonomy's technology automates the delivery and processing of unstructured information gathered from disparate sources," said Mike Lynch Autonomy CEO and founder. "By embracing Autonomy's technology to help create a comprehensive online portal, the U.S. Army is now able to provide its soldiers and staff a central location for essential information."

Winning sites were judged on a number of criteria including design, ease of user navigation, special features and functionality and business value, shown by a sites ability to survive and even thrive in a difficult business climate. CIO Web Business 50 Award judges also looked at innovation, honoring sites creating new and ingenious ways to service their target market, customers or own organization.

Complete coverage of The CIO Web Business 50 Award is featured in the December 1, 2001 issue of CIO magazine and at http://www.cio.com/.
