Virage Upgrades Platform with Release of Next-Generation Video Application Server
Video Application Server 3.0 Enables Fast, Simple Deployment of Enterprise-Scale Streaming Video Applications
WASHINGTON, D.C. - November 28, 2001 - At the Government Video Technology Expo today, Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], announced the release of Video Application Server™ 3.0, a server platform that allows organizations to publish, manage and distribute digital video content. With this latest server software from Virage, customers can deploy and centrally manage an even wider variety of automated streaming video applications. Virage is a leading provider of enterprise-scale video content management and publishing solutions.
Video Application Server 3.0 adds user management and authentication features, allowing systems administrators to manage individuals and groups with varying privileges. Administrative privileges such as account creation and content editing can be assigned to specific groups, enabling flexible and customizable workflows. The new Virage software supports Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), enabling easy integration with existing IT infrastructure. The latest release also provides permission-driven folders that enable users to create, store, manage and selectively share collections of video clips in a secure fashion.
"Customers and systems integrators find our Video Application Server attractive because it's the most cost-effective, flexible and scalable solution for building mission-critical video applications,"
said Dave Girouard, senior vice president of products and services for Virage. "Most organizations are up and running with their online video applications in just a week or two, and our server software powers some of the largest and most complex streaming applications on the Web today."
Virage's latest server software also supports playlists. With this functionality, clips or videos can be assembled into virtual compilations that can be managed, viewed, shared and exported. Playlists enable virtual highlight creation and distributed, web-based video editing. Also included are user-based video preferences and a customizable HTML player that allows users to select the proper playback file based on connection speed and format preference. In addition, Virage has added a flexible plug-in architecture that supports playback of video from any content delivery network (CDN) or enterprise streaming network solution. This abstraction layer means system administrators can switch quickly and painlessly between distribution networks as necessary.
"Using the latest generation software from Virage, we can easily centralize the operations for our video services business and simplify our processes to get video online," said Rob Adams, broadband product manager for Globe Interactive, a division of Globe and Mail. "Virage makes our operation easier to manage and helps us save time and money."
Working with Virage's industry-leading SmartEncode™ suite, Virage's XML-based server software unlocks a wide variety of collaboration and knowledge-sharing applications. Corporations, media & entertainment companies, government agencies and universities have adopted the company's server software to manage their growing streaming media deployments worldwide. Some of the applications supported by Video Application Server include:
Corporate: Video-based eLearning, corporate communications, marketing automation and archiving
Media & Entertainment: Video production, Web publishing, subscription services and syndication
Government: Security and surveillance, training and eLearning and knowledge management
Education: Online learning, video-based courseware, on-demand lectures and events
"Our customers are looking for solutions to help them securely manage their video," said Tony Mangerie, CEO of Media Edge, a leading streaming systems integrator. "The latest version of Video Application Server makes it easier for us to create solutions for our customers who have collaborative workflows and want to securely share information within their organization."
Virage's latest product offering also includes an enhanced software developer's kit (SDK) with new code samples and documentation. The Video Application Server SDK allows integrators to take full advantage of the server's open architecture by customizing user interfaces, defining custom workflows, and integrating third-party data sources.
