Society Of Petroleum Engineers Launches New Web Site Powered By Autonomy

Autonomy's Infrastructure Technology to Bring Oil Industry Research and Information to SPE.org

San Francisco-November 19, 2001-Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is using Autonomy's software to automate the aggregation, categorization, hypertext linking, personalization and retrieval of unstructured information from corporate applications and the Web to populate SPE's knowledge-rich Web site launched today, http://www.SPE.org/.

Autonomy's Portal-in-a-Box™ allows more than 50,000 SPE members to access thousands of pages of technical papers in SPE's content repositories. Users can learn about everything from drilling techniques and technologies to industry news culled from oil and gas Web sites. Specifically, Autonomy's technology allows members to quickly and accurately retrieve information most relevant to their jobs through natural language queries at SPE.org.

"Our members are at the cutting-edge of oil industry research and demand the most up-to-date and relevant information to do their jobs well," said Robert Wyatt, director of information technology for SPE. "Autonomy's software automates the integration of detailed and complex industry information from many different content sources to give our members the best information resources on the Web."

"The oil industry, like all industries, has mountains of information scattered across an almost infinite number of sources," said Mike Lynch, Autonomy CEO and founder. "SPE turns disparate pieces of information into a comprehensible resource that is essential to maximizing the productivity of its members."

Autonomy integrates information from multiple repositories through an understanding of the content. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It then automatically categorizes, links, personalizes and delivers that information. The technology is used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, business intelligence, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.

About Society of Petroleum Engineers

The Society of Petroleum Engineers is a nonprofit, technical and professional association whose more than 50,000 members from more than 100 countries are engaged in energy resources development and production. SPE's mission is to provide the means for collection, dissemination, and exchange of technical information concerning the development of oil and gas resources, subsurface fluid flow, and production of other materials through wellbores for the public benefit; and to provide opportunities through its programs for interested (and qualified) individuals to maintain and upgrade their individual technical competence in the aforementioned areas for the public benefit. SPE can be found on the Web at http://www.SPE.org/.
