Premium TV Selects Virage to Bring English Nationwide Football League to the Internet

Football (Soccer) Supporters Now Able To View Streaming Video Internet Highlights, On Demand, Via Virage Technology

SAN MATEO, Calif. - November 12, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of enterprise-scale video content management and publishing solutions, today announced that Premium TV has chosen Virage to transform this season's English Nationwide Football League highlights into streamed clips for participating club websites. Football fans are now able to re-live their team's best moments via the new web-based system only hours after the game.

Premium TV, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTL Inc. [NYSE: NLI] that owns numerous sports rights including the online rights to the English Nationwide Football League, has chosen the SmartEncode™ suite to enhance its viewers experience of these sports. Virage's technology simultaneously indexes and encodes Premium TV's video content, converting it into a structured database that can be searched on demand, delivering precise video clips.

"Our aim is to enable content providers to take the hassle out of streaming content, and to help maximise their video assets," said Mark Rattley, vice president and general manager of Virage Europe Ltd. "Virage technology helps Premium TV to unlock the value of its football coverage rights with better access and improved distribution."

Over the coming months Premium TV will use SmartEncode, including Virage's industry-leading VideoLogger®, to provide a searchable archive of the entire season's Nationwide Football League highlights for fans. Through the SmartEncode Software Development Kit, Premium TV will also be able to develop and further tailor its highlight service.

"We want to provide our viewers with the unique opportunity of re-living their football clubs' highs and lows over the Internet," said Justin Jamieson of Premium TV. "Quality is paramount for this service, and Virage is proving to be the most efficient and cost-effective way to transform video into web-ready content."
