Sogecable Selects Virage To Streamline Its Video Archive

Spain's Largest Pay-TV Group Will Use Virage Platform to Convert Video Assets into Online Library for Improved Program Assembly

SAN MATEO, Calif. - October 29, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of enterprise-scale video content management and publishing solutions, today announced that Sogecable, Spain's largest Pay-TV group, will use Virage software products to develop one of the most advanced digital archives in Europe. Sogecable will employ Virage SmartEncode™ products as the starting point for its new all digital archiving system.

"We are delighted that Sogecable has chosen Virage," said Mark Rattley, Vice President and General Manager for Virage Europe. "Virage SmartEncode products give Sogecable an advantage over competitors by converting broadcast content into highly accessible and manageable online assets that can be easily deployed on the Web."

Virage SmartEncode technology will enable Sogecable to simultaneously and automatically index and encode video from its 200,000-hour archive of content. Sogecable editors, journalists and researchers will then be able to efficiently browse the library, and instantly access and preview specific video clips in order to assemble them for televised programs.

"Virage's technology will enable our team at Sogecable to deploy one of the world's most advanced archive systems," said Adolfo Remacha, Director Proyecto Técnico for Sogecable. "The speed and ease of access to archived video footage will allow us to produce programs far more creatively and efficiently, dramatically improving the way we produce our television content, and resulting in cost savings delivered to our bottom line."

SmartEncode is a real-time process for simultaneously controlling, automating and integrating video acquisition workflows. It includes the ability to capture, index and encode video. Using the flagship SmartEncode product, VideoLogger®, and its audio recognition plug-ins, Sogecable will simultaneously index and encode their video archive, creating high-resolution production quality video and low-resolution browseable video in a single, time-saving pass. While video is being encoded, the SmartEncode process simultaneously transforms the video into an information rich video database, time-synchronized to the encoded file(s). A user then has keyword searchable access and immediate retrieval of any point within in any video in the archive. Sogecable's newly devised archive will use the Virage SmartEncode products as the front end of an Ascential Media360™ content management system, helping to streamline the production workflow.
