Xerox and Cardiff Software alliance to help the NHS reduce waiting times

Brentford, Middlesex - 2001-10-15 - The Document Company, Xerox, and Cardiff Software Inc, the forms processing leader, today announced an alliance that will help the National Health Service to reduce waiting times and free resources to enhance the quality of patient care.

The combination of Xerox' document management expertise with Cardiff Software's intelligent forms technology and health sector experience, will enable healthcare providers to automate inefficient paper-based and manually-intensive patient and administration data collection processes. This will allow healthcare professionals to provide better care faster, through quicker, easier data capture and rapid access to relevant information, thereby enabling resources to be more effectively directed to improving public health. For example, consultants could rapidly access up-to-date patient information, such as medical notes and appointments, from any computer with appropriate security controls enabling them to make clinical decisions more quickly.

By taking a partnership approach with providers such as Cardiff Software, Xerox will design, develop and implement flexible document management solutions that are tailored to individual hospitals, clinics and health practices. Each solution can incorporate forms designed to minimize handwritten entries through the preprinting of standard data, use of tickboxes and so on, thus improving the accuracy of the data collected. These forms can then be completed electronically or scanned into Xerox' document management system which routes information onto the next stage of the process using pre-defined rules and acts as a central repository.

The solution reduces the inefficiencies associated with manually re-keying, validating, compiling and analyzing patient data as well as time wasted searching for distributed documents, by linking all an individual's details and making material available quickly. This will benefit people currently involved in the tedious task of duplicating the same information on multiple forms as well as potentially reducing the costs associated with this manual activity.

Xerox/Cardiff-based solutions will also contribute to the NHS Modernization Plan's objective to provide comprehensive, easy-to-read electronic records by making it simpler to share and manage data.

Tim Dubes, vice president, EMEA Marketing at Cardiff Software, commented: "Our expertise in forms software which allows the electronic design, completion, submission and storage of data captured within forms matches well with Xerox' document management know-how. Together we free considerable human resources to concentrate on the valuable task of analyzing information that was previously used to manually re-key, validate and compile data."

"The National Health Service is very form-intensive with around 800-1000 different types of forms being used by an NHS Trust," stated David Lewendon, national healthcare account manager at Xerox. "It is not unheard of for a trust to process a million copies of just one form in a year! This demonstrates the critical role document management needs to play as part of the overall technology strategy for any healthcare provider especially when 95 percent* of clinical information is contained within paper documents.

"The alliance between Xerox and Cardiff will benefit clients in the healthcare sector through reduced time in handling forms and laying foundations for the Electronic Health Record and Electronic Patient Record which are central to the current NHS Modernization Plan. The integration of paper and electronic documentation is a central issue in healthcare across Europe and by bringing together best-of-breed providers with complementary skills and technologies, we aim to meet that need."
