VirageĀ® Delivers Next-Generation SmartEncodeā„¢ Suite

Award-Winning Video Content Management Solutions Provider Enhances Automation and Transformation Capabilities

SAN MATEO, Calif. - September 26, 2001 - [Nasdaq: VRGE] Virage, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise-scale video content management and publishing solutions, today announced its next-generation SmartEncode family of products. Virage announced VideoLoggerĀ® 5.0, Software Developer Kit 5.0 and ControlCenterā„¢ 2.0, further automating the video content workflow process and reducing cost of ownership and deployment.

The new versions of the SmartEncode suite create a simultaneous, real-time process for controlling, automating and integrating the workflow surrounding video transformation including encoding, indexing and delivery. Customers will benefit from enhanced automation, as well as tighter time synchronization and control for simultaneous, multi-format encoding.

"We are very excited about our new VideoLogger 5.0 product-the most mature and scalable product for encoding and indexing video on the market," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "These enhancements to our widely adopted SmartEncode product family are a direct result of our experience with more than 275 customers-listening to their needs-particularly those in the corporate, government, media and entertainment markets. Virage's customer-proven and tightly integrated suite now solves a broader set of problems faced by enterprises working with video and looking to improve workflow efficiencies and the bottom-line."

Virage's VideoLogger 5.0 can now be configured as a Windows Service, creating a tighter integration with the underlying operating system for higher levels of reliability and scalability. This capability is important to the ever-growing list of Fortune 1000 and media and entertainment companies who are capitalizing on their rich media assets by streaming valuable video content on their internal and external websites.

"Video transformation is no longer, by definition, a manual and time-intensive process, but rather an efficient and cost-effective method of turning video into a valuable corporate asset," said Carlos Montalvo, chief marketing officer at Virage. "Virage SmartEncode delivers the automation and scale required for processing and publishing large volumes of analog or digital video."

The SmartEncode Family Includes:

Control Center-manages, monitors and schedules multiple video feeds

VideoLogger-automatically creates a rich, multi-layered video database

Encoder Software-automates and controls the encoding workflow for multiple formats and bit rates

Media Analysis Plug-Ins-enriches video database through enhanced signal analysis

Software Developer's Kit-extended open architecture for custom integration

New Feature Summary:

Automated clip marking and segmentation tools for unattended operation

New configuration tools, delivering simpler and more intuitive methods for setting up and administering VideoLoggers and encoders

Tight integration with the underlying operating system through a "lights-out" configuration thereby achieving a higher level of reliability, scalability and recovery
