Sunburst Technology Selects Virage to Publish Video Products to the Web

Sunburst Uses Virage Video Application Platform to Provide On-Demand Preview and Purchase of Video-Based Teaching Materials

SAN MATEO, Calif. - September 24, 2001 - [Nasdaq: VRGE], Virage Inc, a leading provider of enterprise-scale video content management and publishing solutions, today announced that Sunburst Technology is using the Virage Video Application Platform to stream full motion, full-length on-demand previews of Sunburst's products. Sunburst Technology, a Houghton Mifflin company, is the #1 publisher engaged in creating guidance and health video materials, according to a recent independent survey. Previews are published on Sunburst's website and linked to its online store. This new capability provides Sunburst customers with an integrated and easy review and purchase experience, and allows Sunburst to realize cost-savings through efficient repurposing of their existing content.

By employing the Virage video content management and publishing platform to digitize and publish their existing video product, Sunburst is able to leverage its website as a new distribution channel for its product offering. The Virage-enabled video facilitates increased sales by helping customers quickly access and preview the various titles before purchasing. In addition, Virage is helping Sunburst to realize savings by minimizing the need to manually deliver VHS tapes to potential customers as part of Sunburst's 30-day free trial evaluation program.

"The on-demand Sunburst video previews from Virage are a great teacher time-saver," said Conall Ryan, president of Sunburst Technology. "For starters, we will reach more potential customers and increase efficiency through reduced delivery costs of preview tapes. Long-term, our goal is to make our award-winning guidance and health products more valuable in schools while extending their reach into homes."

Virage uses its SmartEncode™ process to encode and index Sunburst's video content, breaking the original video into short clips with descriptive annotations. Using its Video Application Server™, Virage then publishes the resulting preview clips, seamlessly integrating them into the Sunburst website (www.sunburst.com). Existing and new customers are able to quickly search for and preview segments of Sunburst educational titles prior to purchase. A link within the player window to Sunburst's online store allows interested viewers to purchase the full videotape.

Approximately one half of Sunburst products are computer-based programs for grades K-12 that include, among others, early learning, language arts, mathematics and science, and assessment and keyboarding tools. The remaining half represents their video programs for grades K-12 that include character education, bullying/harassment, drug education, sex education and success skills.

"The education and eLearning industries are realizing that the Internet is an efficient and effective medium to deliver rich media information programs to reach existing and new customers," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "Sunburst is well established in the education industry and the company is harnessing Virage's technology in a new way-- to allow teachers to preview content on a fast-track basis."
