Autonomy's Dremedia Becomes The Voice Of Broadcast Journalism

Dremedia partnership with Quantel brings speech recognition to TV, film and the Web

CAMBRIDGE, England, 24th September 2001 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU.; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a leading provider of infrastructure technology for the enterprise, today announced a new partnership between its interactive digital TV subsidiary, Dremedia, and Quantel, a specialist in tools for digital content creation. The partnership addresses a key problem of news production - locating video footage by reference to the spoken word - by combining Dremedia's Autonomy-powered media analysis technology with Quantel's Clipbox servers and editing packages.

The partnership agreement will target the international broadcast media industry, making extensive use of the language independence of the underlying Autonomy technology. The combination of the two technologies will enable news and other broadcast material to get to air faster, whilst virtually eradicating associated manual costs. Previously, finding relevant footage required journalists, interns or researchers to view hours of tape and then perform the editing operations manually. Dremedia and Quantel now provide an automated, end-to-end process.

Dremedia's media analysis technology employs a wide range of recognition technologies - small and large vocabulary continuous speech recognition and information retrieval from spoken documents - to power applications in speech and audio processing, such as speech recognition, speaker recognition, language recognition and speech enhancement. This enables Dremedia to automatically perform a number of operations, including piecing together related extracts of film, automatically inserting subtitles and "cleaning up" poor quality broadcast material, amongst others. At the same time, other algorithms within Dremedia's technology are able to segment an image into its component parts, identify, understand, label and index it, and in this way automatically assemble related footage.

Quantel's Clipbox technology adds to the efficiency of the process by using unique random access disk technology to enable speech to be indexed, located and played to air immediately - even while the original feed is still being recorded. Simple Windows editing tools also enable clips to be defined, stored and instantaneously incorporated into the edit.

Richard Gaunt, co-founder and CTO of Autonomy, commented: "Broadcast journalism, just like any other industry, needs to enhance its business efficiency by keeping unnecessary manual expense down. Dremedia's partnership with Quantel has produced an excellent tool for automated news production, which answers the industry's economic needs very convincingly. We are delighted that Dremedia, within a few short months of its incorporation, has not only won key customers such as the BBC but has also forged a strategic alliance of this calibre."

Trevor Francis, Business Manager for News at Quantel, said: "Quantel News systems are all about getting the news to air faster and at higher quality. Being able to rapidly locate and bring in extra material around any subject gives it more relevance and more life - just what news needs to pull audiences."

On 15th September 2001, Quantel won the prestigious Peter Wayne Award at the broadcast industry's flagship event, IBC. Now in its twelfth year, the Peter Wayne Award recognises the product which the eminent judging panel considers most to embody its criteria of design and innovation. Quantel was one of over 40 entries for the award.
