SilverStream® And Autonomy Expand Strategic Partnership With OEM Agreement

SilverStream eXtend™ Director to Ship With Autonomy's Industry Leading Technology

Billerica, Mass./San Francisco, CA - September 18, 2001 - SilverStream Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSSW) and Autonomy, Inc. (Nasdaq: AUTN; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN; LSE: AU.) today announced that they have entered into an OEM agreement to embed a core piece of Autonomy's dynamic reasoning engine within SilverStream eXtend™ Director 3.0 (eXtend Director). By incorporating this technology into eXtend Director, users will benefit from the flexibility and power of Autonomy's infrastructure software to identify and leverage relevant information within the enterprise.

A key piece of the SilverStream eXtend product suite, eXtend Director 3.0 is a comprehensive set of capabilities for consuming and delivering dynamic content, data and Web Services in a relevant way to customers, partners and employees on any device. Available today in beta (see related announcement issued September 18, 2001), eXtend Director is fully J2EE compliant and runs on market-leading J2EE application servers including the SilverStream eXtend Application Server. Autonomy's technology enhances eXtend Director's content management subsystem by enabling computers to automatically analyze and rank concepts within unstructured information - including email, voicemail, Web pages and documents - so that it can be categorized, linked to related information and delivered to the appropriate person. Using eXtend Director with Autonomy's technology, users no longer need to sift through irrelevant content to find information they need, which allows organizations to focus on core business objectives and save time and money.

"We found Autonomy's concept-based technology to be more powerful and scaleable than key word-based technologies," said Kim Sheffield, vice president of eBusiness technologies for SilverStream Software. "The strength of Autonomy's solution, combined with the quality of their support and market-leading presence, made them a natural first choice for SilverStream. eXtend Director uniquely offers a very flexible approach to helping organizations provide a relevant and customizable user experience, and the addition of Autonomy's technology makes this even easier for our customers."

According to Richard Gaunt, chief technology officer and co-founder of Autonomy, SilverStream is a valuable OEM Partner because its software simplifies and accelerates the delivery of sophisticated business applications that leverage the Internet. "We were pleased that SilverStream joined our OEM Partner program earlier this year and we are delighted that they are already rolling out the first of their products, eXtend Director, which includes our technology," said Gaunt. "With Autonomy's technology, SilverStream eXtend Director will make it even easier for companies to provide ubiquitous access to information and electronic processes - no matter where it resides throughout the enterprise or on the Web."

The expanded relationship and OEM agreement between SilverStream and Autonomy strengthens the partnership that the two companies have benefited from since 1999. SilverStream eXtend Director customers will also benefit from seamless integration with other Autonomy products and solutions. For example, customers will be able to aggregate content from a variety of mainstream corporate systems including Lotus Notes, MS Exchange, Interwoven and Documentum. SilverStream and Autonomy will be working together to bring the strength of these complementary offerings to their combined customer base, as well as pursue joint opportunities and support each other's marketing efforts. Additionally, Autonomy and SilverStream will deliver a single point-of-contact, integrated customer support to customers.
