IBM and Verity Donate to September 11th Fund and the United Way Silicon Valley's 9/11 Response Fund
San Jose, Calif. - 2001-09-14 - Silicon Valley companies continued to announce new donations to help the victims of Tuesday's tragic terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. The largest gift announced Thursday was $5 million from IBM Corporation, and the most surprising was $1 million from Verity, a leading provider of business portal infrastructure software headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA. The Verity donation kicks off the United Way Silicon Valley 9/11 Fund.
"As the nation strives to make sense of Tuesday's tragedy, it is our hope that this donation can serve to ease the pain of those most directly affected," said Gary J. Sbona, chairman and chief executive officer of Verity, Inc. "The spirit of the people working night and day to assist in the recovery process demonstrates the strength and resiliency of the American people."
The Verity gift was initiated by Verity management and made on behalf of all 510 Verity employees working worldwide.
"This corporate gift made in the name of Verity's employees was incredibly generous and most unexpected," said United Way Silicon Valley President Greg Larson. He added, "All we did was pick up the phone, and there they were wanting to help."
These donations will provide immediate support to established emergency assistance agencies, such as the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, both of whom are founding members of the United Way locally and nationally. They will also provide assistance to other nonprofit health and human service agencies to help families and communities rebuild once their immediate needs are met. 100% of all donations to the September 11th and the 9/11 Response Fund will go directly to the community relief and rebuilding efforts in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
The United Way Silicon Valley 9/11 Response Fund was established to provide immediate support and assistance from Silicon Valley for those individuals, families, and communities hurt during Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. The long term purpose of the fund will be to support public safety personnel - firefighters, police officers, emergency medical staff and others - who are hurt or killed in the line of duty.
