Autonomy Expands Relationship With IBM Announcing New Role In IBM Portal Strategy

New partnership brings Autonomy into IBM's WebSphere portal platform

CAMBRIDGE, England, 14 August 2001 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN, LSE: AU., Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that its technology has been adopted by IBM to power applications within the IBM Strategic Portal Framework. This framework includes IBM's WebSphere Portal Server, which exploits IBM's Websphere Application Server, IBM's core Technology for Web-based applications.

Autonomy's technology will enhance IBM's WebSphere Portal Server applications by providing an automated infrastructure that aggregates and links related information from multiple repositories based on an understanding of the concepts within the information. As a result of integration through understanding, applications can access data regardless of its source and users can access information from one application. This automated capability enables IBM to create a portal platform offering a single point of interaction with content, applications, processes and people.

In addition, a large number of Autonomy's core operations such as the automated categorization, hypertext linking, personalization, and delivery of information will be accessible through IBM's WebSphere Portal Server.

WebSphere Portal supports a wide variety of pervasive devices enabling users to interact with B2E, B2B and B2C portals, using any device, wired or wireless. Under the terms of the agreement, Autonomy's WebSphere applications will be available through IBM's online Portlet Catalog, making it easy for existing IBM customers to upgrade their portals with the new functionality.

Larry Bowden, vice-president of e-portals solutions at IBM, said: "While others are partnering for simple plug-ins around collaboration and knowledge management, IBM is announcing the next generation of integration beyond what other portals can do."

Richard Gaunt, CTO and co-founder of Autonomy Corporation, said: "IBM's vision of an all-in-one, flagship platform for portal development is a compelling one. The masterstroke, in our view, is the strategy of creating a fluid and efficient value-add mechanism that enables users to grow key functionality in line with their needs and the challenges of the e-business marketplace. As a current partner with IBM Global Services Corporate Portal Offering (CPO) initiative, Autonomy is delighted to be expanding its relationship with IBM and taking on this value-add role in IBM's WebSphere product group's portal strategy."

At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyse text and voice and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It can then automatically categorise, link, personalise and deliver that information. The technology is used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.
