Cardiff reseller Electric Paper GmbH implements award-winning software to automate work at Daimler Chrysler
Brentford, Middlesex - 2001-07-16 - For German DaimlerChrysler, quality assurance (QA) is an intensive, hands-on process involving millions of forms each year. During car production, QA checks are performed on all the parts of all the cars and the results are documented on QA-Cards. Until recently, the cards were archived onto microfilm.
To develop a complete solution for digitally archiving the forms, DaimlerChrysler hired ANACOMP as a general contractor. ANACOMP brought in Electric Paper GmbH to implement the form processing solution.
The form processing challenges are significant. The two-page QA card design has varied over time, and different cards are used for the same purpose. There are a different number of cards for different vehicles, and when the cards arrive for processing, they are not always in sequence. Also the cards are colored (e.g. red, blue, yellow, green) and have several labels on them. At the factory, the cards, along with the Car ID barcode and Form ID are produced using dot matrix printers. They are filled in using stamps with different colored ink and often get dirty during handling.
Cardiff solution installed by:
Electric Paper GmbH
Solutions implemented:
TELEform Enterprise
KODAK IL 500 scanner (w/IPU)
MS SQL-Server
As implemented, the solution involves a KODAK IL 500 Scanner with IPU, MS SQL-Server and TELEform Enterprise with two additional Readers and 2 additional Verifiers. Once the QA-Cards are filled in at the factory in Rastatt, they are sent to a scanning service in Stuttgart where they are sorted, read, and verified, and exported as multi-page TIFF files and forwarded to the central archive on streamer-tapes. The status of each card processed is stored in an SQL Server Database, so that only completed forms, those with Form ID and Card ID barcode are archived. The archive is also fully indexed.
The TELEform solution was able to overcome all of the processing challenges, and the benefits of the system have been tremendous. In the first 9 months of operation, over 2.56 million forms were processed for 160,000 cars. The daily volume is 28,000 forms with a 97% recognition success rate.
