U.S. Department Of Labor to Deploy Autonomy Infrastructure Technology for disabilitydirect.gov
Unique Online Resource for Americans With Disabilities Provides Educational Tools and Employment Opportunities
San Francisco-June 26, 2001-Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the Web and the enterprise, today announced that The Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities/Office of Disability Employment Policy of The United States Department of Labor will use Autonomy Server™, Autonomy Update™ and Autonomy Categorizer™ for the upcoming DisabilityDirect.gov project.
DisabilityDirect.gov is part of President Bush's New Freedom Initiative, which seeks to expand learning opportunities, access to technology, and employment opportunities for Americans with disabilities. Scheduled for a phased introduction beginning mid-summer, DisabilityDirect.gov will be a comprehensive resource for Americans with disabilities, employers and other interested parties. It will consolidate resources and information from the federal, state and local government service providers as well as private organizations. DisabilityDirect.gov will allow people in local municipalities and states to locate and identify services within their own area.
"DisabilityDirect.gov is one example of the Department of Labor's commitment to developing programs that support the President's New Freedom Initiative," said Dick Griffin, project manager, DisabilityDirect.gov, Office of the Department of Labor. "This program represents a fundamental shift towards providing e-government services that best utilize technology to empower our citizens and workforce. Technologies like Autonomy's will play a key role in the success of this e-government initiative."
DisabilityDirect.gov is composed of two sites: one for "partners" and the other "public." The private partner administration site provides a staging area for the service provider collaboration and content management that is vital to the effort's success. Autonomy's infrastructure technology will automatically aggregate and deliver the vast amounts of information from the government and non-government partners and suppliers more efficiently.
According to Peter Gallagher, president of devIS, the information systems consulting firm that has been selected to design, develop and host DisabilityDirect.gov, one of the most unique aspect's of the project is its collaborative approach. "DisabilityDirect.gov provides one-stop online access to resources, services and information from multiple government and grantee sources," said Gallagher. "With Autonomy's highly scaleable software, we can build a site that filters down huge volumes of information to create a more approachable and dynamic resource."
"Autonomy will allow the Department of Labor to save time and money because it minimizes the need to have employees and DisabilityDirect partners manually categorize, tag and insert hypertext links between related content," said Richard Gaunt, Autonomy chief technology officer and co-founder. "For example, as new information is created by a local government, our software analyzes the main concepts and then automatically categorizes it and inserts links to related content in real-time."
The DisabilityDirect.gov public site will provide easy, universal access to essential information and services based on a flexible topic map oriented by program type and location. When the public site is fully enabled this Fall, Autonomy's technology will allow users to find validated local services and online learning opportunities related to their specific issue. Autonomy's infrastructure on the administrative site will ensure that the public site is kept up-to-date with the most authoritative sources vetted by partner experts at all levels.
At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It can then automatically categorize, link, personalize and deliver that information. The technology is used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.
