Telespazio to Develop and Distribute Virage Platform in South America
Leading Satellite Services Provider Will Now Include Virage Platform as Part of Its Telecommunication Solution
STREAMING MEDIA WEST 2001, Long Beach, Calif. - June 20, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of video content management and publishing solutions, today announced that Telespazio Brasil, a worldwide leader in satellite provisioning services, has selected the Virage Video Application Platform for its broadband and interactive video systems integration projects in South America. Telespazio will leverage its recent $27M contract win with Brazil's Anatel Agency into a region-wide distribution and system integration strategy based on the Virage platform. Telespazio Brasil will now include the Virage platform as part of its comprehensive telecommunications and broadband solution offering for customers in the South American countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
In March 2001, the National Telecommunications Agency of Brazil (Anatel) selected Telespazio's technology and integration services as part of a turnkey system that provides the Brazilian government with the ability to store, analyze and distribute large amounts of television and radio content across the country. The Virage platform played an integral role in the success of the project, providing government officials with the ability to efficiently access and publish clips of video within the archive and distribute them nationwide in a matter of seconds on Anatel's private broadband network. Telespazio is currently pursuing additional opportunities to build and manage similar private broadband networks in other South American countries that will allow customers to consolidate, manage and distribute critical digital video information.
"We are thrilled to be developing on the Virage Video Application Platform. We demonstrated with the Anatel project that Virage's mature product suite gives us a proven competitive advantage when it comes to bidding and winning these large-scale telecommunications and interactive video projects," said Marzio Laurenti, executive vice president of Telespazio Latin America. "Integrating the Virage platform into our existing broadband and telecommunication applications and services will allow Telespazio to revolutionize how communities and enterprises across South America transform video into an easily accessible information medium."
"South America is rapidly out-pacing the US market in the deployment of nation-wide broadband networks for use by government agencies and the private sector. The technology development and distribution partnership between Telespazio and Virage will accelerate our platform adoption throughout South American's largest telecomm and media markets," said Michael Lock, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Virage. "Together, Telespazio and Virage are providing advanced video application capabilities that will significantly alter the way that corporations, government agencies, and media companies integrate on-demand digital video into their next generation telecommunications infrastructure."
