Over 125 Partners Drive Broad Adoption of Virage's Video Application Platform
Launch of Video Solution Marketplace Expands Industry-Leading Offerings
STREAMING MEDIA WEST 2001, Long Beach, Calif. - June 20, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of video content management and publishing solutions, today announced the formal launch of its Video Solution Marketplace on the Virage website, bringing together its extensive and broad reaching suite of third-party products that support the Virage Video Application Platform. With over 125 business partners, Virage's platform and VDF metadata format have gained wide market acceptance by providing significant leverage for independent software vendors and system integrators that are helping enterprises and media companies turn video into strategic online applications.
Virage's open architecture and loyal developer support are key accelerators contributing to the rapid growth of the video content management and IP-based video publishing industry. The Marketplace provides a single destination where customers can find products and plug-in modules that extend the capability of Virage's award-winning platform and also allows Virage development partners to showcase their offerings.
"The race is on within the streaming media industry to develop a platform capable of supporting a broad array of multimedia applications. Companies that truly support open architectures, such as Virage, will have the best chance at snaring a long-term leadership position in the development of these platforms that are likely to play a major role in defining how streaming media is adopted in enterprise and consumer-oriented applications," said Steven Vonder Haar, analyst at the Yankee Group. "Just as Quark prospered with an open-architecture that allowed third-party extensions for the print publishing industry, Virage platform adoption by partners and developers mirrors this concept within the video publishing industry."
The Virage platform consists of tools and applications that transform video for online use, and provides an open-ended architecture that can be leveraged by third-party developers to integrate interactive digital video into mission critical enterprise applications, such as e-learning, product development and compliance, brand management, corporate communications, and content syndication on the Web. The developer tools are in their fourth generation and cover every aspect and integration point in the areas of video encoding, indexing, automation, content management, publishing and application hosting. The platform allows partners to leverage and extend Virage's industry-leading feature set and not waste time and scarce engineering resources building out baseline infrastructure to handle and exploit time base media.
"Finally, with Virage Video Application Platform, companies can start realizing the tremendous potential for knowledge transfer inherent in video-based knowledge assets," said Chuck Luce, analyst at the Delphi Group.
"Virage has always stressed an open platform approach to technology combined with a strong developer partnering program. The result has been the enthusiastic and rapid adoption of our platform and expanded offerings for our customers," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "Companies dedicate many valuable resources to work on the Virage platform. We are pleased that we can, with the help of our partners and developers, offer our customers a broad range of choices and possibilities for their video application needs."
