Discovery.com Uses Virage to Preview Upcoming Discovery Networks Programming

Virage's Dynamic Publishing Tool Automatically Publishes Programming Clips to Discovery.com

SAN MATEO, Calif. - June 11, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of video content management and publishing solutions, today announced that the Virage Video Application Platform will serve as the foundation for the new Discovery Networks Preview area available now on Discovery.com. The Discovery Networks Preview area on Discovery.com utilizes Virage's dynamic publishing tool to automatically publish stored clips of upcoming Discovery Networks programs onto Discovery.com based on their air date, time, and network. Viewers can then enjoy high-speed highlights of special programs and ongoing series slated to air in the coming months on the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and Discovery Health.

"Discovery is excited about deploying the cutting-edge Virage platform, which makes seamless streaming video publishing onto our site easy and efficient," said David Karp, senior vice president of interactive content. "The new Discovery Networks Preview area offers online samples of high-quality programming across our networks any time of day, and can now be automatically and continuously updated without the need for manual manipulation of clips. An additional feature of the site and the Virage system is the ability for convergence sponsors to leverage their on-air advertising within the online video previews. We are proud of being on the leading edge of turning new technology into new opportunities for our clients."

The streaming video clips highlighted in the Discovery Networks Preview area, and published from the Virage platform, will be stored in a database and automatically changed on the site depending on the present week, day and time as recognized by the publishing tool. The Virage software selects appropriate preview clips then automatically uploads them to Discovery.com where viewers can select specific programs through a main preview menu for each channel then view a clip sorted by the date and time of the show with one mouse click.

"Discovery Network's website demonstrates how the Virage platform can extend both the brand and economic reach of television broadcasting. Our dynamic publishing application significantly reduces production time and costs associated with the republishing of broadcast content into Internet programming," said Carlos Montalvo, Virage's chief marketing officer. "With Virage, site owners do not have to constantly shuffle their time-sensitive video clips from the broadcast department to their website."
