UK Department of Trade and Industry Selects Autonomy for a Global Information Initiative

CAMBRIDGE, England - 31 May, 2001 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU.; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a leading provider of infrastructure technology for the Web and the enterprise, today announced that the United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has selected its technology to power globalwatchonline.com, to deliver global technology information to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The DTI's International Technology Service chose Autonomy's Portal-in-a-Box™ and Active Knowledge™ for this deployment. Both these technologies enable large volumes of unstructured information (office documents, Web pages, e-mails, etc.) to be managed and processed automatically, based on the concepts contained within them. For globalwatchonline, the DTI will use Autonomy to automatically profile users' interests and then deliver to them information on relevant international technology opportunities, supplied by British Embassies across the world. Internally, the DTI's International Technology Service will use Autonomy to automatically process and manage internal information comprising office documents, Web and intranet pages, e-mails etc.

Richard Gaunt, co-founder and CTO of Autonomy, commented: "Autonomy has the ability to make sense of large volumes of digital information and then to automate the various processes that act on that information. This means that there is no need for humans to spend time and therefore money organizing the information manually and deciding what to do with it. We are very pleased to welcome the DTI to a global customer base that includes international governmental operations such as NASA and the US Department of Energy."

Christine Mitchell, the DTI's Programme Manager for globalwatchonline.com, commented: "Globalwatchonline is critical to the success of business, as it enables companies to stay abreast of technological developments overseas which can lead to business opportunities. Autonomy will make the entire information process so much more efficient and enable users to take advantage of fast-breaking information - whether this be globalwatchonline market opportunities or internal business intelligence".

At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyse text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It can then automatically categorise, link, personalise and deliver that information. The technology is used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.

About the DTI's International Technology Service

The DTI's International Technology Service helps British business to identify and learn from leading organizations around the world to improve their competitiveness at home and abroad. In addition to its business website globalwatchonline.com, and its sister magazine Global Watch, ITS supports group missions to overseas countries, has a 16-strong team which forges links with specific countries on behalf of British companies and seconds individuals to work overseas with leading edge companies for up to a year.
