Virage Demonstrates On-Demand Streaming Video Delivery to Wireless Devices

Virage Video Application Platform Provides Efficient Wireless Video Access and Distribution

NAB 2001 CONVENTION, Las Vegas, NV- April 23, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of software and services that enable video for strategic online applications, demonstrated wireless delivery of on-demand streaming video to handheld devices at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas. This latest extension of the Virage Video Application Platform provides efficient distribution of video content via IEEE 802.11 wireless networks, and enables video to be easily searched, retrieved and streamed in real-time on handheld PDA's. The technology provides content owners with another opportunity to extend the reach of their digital assets, while allowing users to access video wherever and whenever they need it.

Virage showcased its new capability using NHL.com's video highlights site, which uses Virage technology to provide hockey fans with personalized player and team video highlight coverage of the 2001 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the demonstration, the Virage Video Application Server™, which manages the NHL content, is accessed at several locations on the exhibit floor through a wireless LAN. Using an IEEE 802.11 wireless network, users of Compaq iPaq PDAs can easily search, browse and select exact video clips of interest.

Once the desired video segment has been identified, it is streamed from the Generic Media™ Publishing Service. The Generic Media Publishing Service's support of the Virage Video Application Platform gives Virage customers the ability to publish a single instance of video content, and dynamically distribute it in multiple formats and bitrates that match the user's wireless device. Virage's new on-demand wireless streaming capability easily extends the distribution of video content that has already been transformed by the SmartEncode™ process, opening additional revenue opportunities through a new delivery method.

"This demonstration is an excellent example of how the Virage platform will allow us to extend coverage of the NHL," said Doug Perlman, NHL Senior Vice President of Television and Media Ventures. "This ability will become increasingly important as the number of distribution channels for our sports content multiplies and wireless delivery of rich media becomes commonplace."

Virage's new technology will provide high-speed PDA users with the ability to search directly for video clips online then immediately stream each segment on their handheld device through a wireless IEEE 802.11 LAN connection. Users would then have the option of downloading and saving video clips directly on the PDA so they can email each segment or watch them without a network connection. The technology provides users and developers with the application framework to create personalized preferences on their PC that automatically retrieve content related to their profile then deliver it directly to a PDA for viewing at a later time. The new capabilities permit integration of the entire Virage platform into the wireless format for access to video with full-color graphics and audio.

"Wireless devices and PDAs are garnering significant attention as a potential platform for distributing on-demand multimedia content. Enabling software, like that developed by Virage, is a key component in the on-going efforts to transform the novelty of multimedia distribution via wireless devices into a mainstream service," said Steven Vonder Haar, an analyst at the Yankee Group. "As one of the leaders of the on-demand digital video movement on the Internet, the move into developing systems for use in the wireless marketplace is a logical next step for Virage to take. Given the bandwidth constraints associated with wireless and mobile device networks, capabilities that help consumers tap into the content most relevant to them will be particularly crucial."

"The emergence of the Internet allowed Virage to take video out of the living room and turn it into valuable, on-demand information," said Carlos Montalvo, CMO of Virage. "The evolution of high-speed wireless networks now allows us to remove the final remaining barriers between users and the information that they need to access anytime, and anywhere."
