NHL and Virage Bring 2001 Stanley Cup Playoff Highlights to NHL.com
Personalized Game Highlights Available On-Demand After Every Game Starting Apr. 11
NEW YORK and SAN MATEO, Calif.- April 10, 2001 - The National Hockey League announced today that it has joined with Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], to develop and distribute personalized player and team video highlight coverage of the 2001 Stanley Cup Playoffs on NHL.com, beginning April 11. Virage, a leader in online video applications, will provide NHL.com with the infrastructure to create and publish an on-demand, searchable video database for hockey fans of every 2001 Stanley Cup Playoff game.
NHL.com will now offer hockey fans unprecedented coverage of the 2001 Stanley Cup playoffs by using an online database of video and statistics compiled over the course of each game. Located on the League's web site under "My Custom Highlights," the new technology will enable fans for the first time on NHL.com to personalize their viewing experience by selectively searching and viewing highlights of a particular game, player, or team after the game ends. Fans will now have instant video access of shots, goals, assists and saves of any individual player or team throughout the entire Stanley Cup playoffs.
"We are extremely excited about the opportunities presented by the Virage technologies," said Doug Perlman, NHL Senior Vice President of Television and Media Ventures. "Our fans are incredibly passionate and have an insatiable appetite for hockey coverage. Our demographic research indicates that our fans have more access to personal computers and tend to be more Internet literate than fans in other professional sports-making this new service on NHL.com an ideal resource during the Stanley Cup Playoffs."
In this partnership, the NHL will use the Virage Video Application Platform, including the SmartEncode™ process and Video Application Server. Headquartered in San Mateo, California, Virage is the leading provider of solutions that enable video for strategic online applications.
The Virage Video Application Platform transforms video into an effective online medium that is easy to publish, manage and distribute on the Internet or corporate Intranets. The Virage platform provides content owners with the complete infrastructure for seamlessly integrating streaming video into business, entertainment and information applications.
"We are very pleased to provide the software, services and infrastructure that allows the National Hockey League to dramatically extend its coverage of the 2001 Stanley Cup Playoffs," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. NHL.com's on-demand streaming video coverage of the playoffs will add new major dimensions, such as interactivity and personalized viewing to this great sport. With this new offering, hockey fans worldwide will be able to easily share the experience of game highlights from anywhere, at anytime."
