Anatel Selects Virage for National Telecommunication Initiative
Virage Platform Allows Brazilian Government to Effectively Manage Digital Video from Across the Nation
SAN MATEO, Calif.- April 3, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of software and services that enable video for strategic online applications, today announced that Anatel, the National Telecommunications Agency of Brazil, will use the Virage Video Application Platform in an initiative that will allow the government to consolidate, manage and distribute critical digital video information from across the country. This initial award to Virage is one of the first components of a $12 million (R$25.6 million) project to create a radio and video distribution infrastructure throughout Brazil over the next 15 months.
In the first stage of this nationwide project, the Brazilian government will deploy Virage technology at 28 regional sites to consolidate and manage incoming news feeds from around the country 24 hours a day. Using the Virage SmartEncode™ process, incoming video will be indexed, encoded and archived to allow for the monitoring and instantaneous retrieval of small pieces of vital information from anywhere in the country at any time. Evaluation of the interactive digital content will enable government officials to formulate informed responses to regional and national situations rapidly and effectively.
"Anatel's integration of streaming video capabilities into the Brazilian government's telecommunications infrastructure signals that advanced technology is changing the way that people can effectively collect and analyze information from distant places," said Steven Vonder Haar, an analyst at the Yankee Group. "This massive scale deployment of streaming media technology illustrates the critical role that integrated video application platforms, like the one developed by Virage, can play in helping large organizations to easily capture, centralize, and distribute an ever-increasing amount of digital media. Virage's technology creates new efficiencies in communication and decision-support that were simply not possible until its automated, all-digital, network-based video solutions were introduced."
"Virage is very pleased at Anatel's selection of our technology as an essential component of the Brazilian government's digital telecommunications network," said Michael Lock, senior vice president of worldwide sales of Virage. "This project signals the move that organizations worldwide are making toward all-digital production and distribution of video for faster and more effective communication and decision-support."
