Major League Baseball Advanced Media Selects Virage to Bring 2001 Baseball Season to the Web

Virage Enables MLBAM to Transform Televised Coverage of Baseball Games into On-Demand Video Programming

NEW YORK, NY and SAN MATEO, Calif.- March 28, 2001 - MLB Advanced Media, L.P.(MLBAM), the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, today announced that it has selected Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of software products and application services that enable video for the Internet, to develop and distribute programming and video coverage of the 2001 Major League Baseball season on MLB.com. Virage will provide MLBAM with the infrastructure services to create a searchable video database of the entire 2001 season. Starting with the season opener, every pitch of every game will be available on-demand on MLB.com for the rest of the 2001 season.

Using the online database of video and statistics compiled over the course of the season, fans will be able to search selectively for and view particular game, player, or team highlights shortly after each game ends. In this partnership MLBAM will leverage the Virage Video Application Platform, including the SmartEncode™ process and Video Application Server, to transform its television coverage of the 2001 season into interactive online content. Virage will also provide application services and custom web editing tools that allow MLBAM video editors and producers to create streaming video game-highlight packages for same-night coverage on MLB.com. As part of its complete solution, Virage will deploy Major League Baseball's streaming media content via Akamai's high-performance content distribution network.

"It is our goal to make MLB.com the premier destination for baseball fans on the Internet, and our partnership with Virage will enable us to offer the most comprehensive and interactive baseball video content available," said Bob Bowman, president and CEO of Major League Baseball Advanced Media. "True interactivity allows our fans to see specifically what they want, when they want to see it, and that's what our partnership with Virage provides."

"We are excited to provide MLB Advanced Media with the software, services and infrastructure required to help MLB.com deliver the most compelling multimedia web experience," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "MLB.com's on-demand video coverage of the 2001 season will add important new dimensions, such as interactivity and personalized viewing, to America's pastime. Given the appetite that its fans have for highlights and statistics, baseball is the perfect sport for the Internet. With this project, MLB Advanced Media has taken a leadership role in the use of the Internet for revolutionizing sports coverage."
