World of Music relies on Verity's Portal Technology for its Online-Shop

Grossostheim, Germany - 2001-03-22 - Verity, the company powering business portal, today announced the conclusion of a project with ‘World of Music' (WOM). The portal technology based on K2 Toolkit has decisive benefits for fast and successful searching and ordering from WOM's giant online music catalogue. Flexibility, linear scalability and speed were the impetus for implementing the Verity tool.
"With the search machine from Verity, we have realised sensationally short response times in our B2C Internet shop", says Stefan Pruehs, project manager for Internet/e-commerce at WOM. "Together with our project partner Kabel New Media Friedrichshafen (KNM FN), we were able to be online with our shop at www.wom.de in just six months. With this, we were not only ahead of our competitors in terms of time. Product range and service as in all of our branches also play a role in regards to quality - just like in the Premier League."
After testing similar sites in the international arena, a decisive factor for WOM was implementation of a scalable and extremely fast search in this shop. Every potential customer who does not find what he or she is looking for, or who has to wait a subjectively long time for a response, is potentially a lost customer in e-commerce. The K2 software and the shop system from Orbiz Digitrade communicate via an interface used by KNM FN. Experience shows that KNM FN offers the best performance, even if there are thousands of users online at the same time. With the K2 Toolkit a differentiated search is possible, which determines the quality of the search results depending on the type of search (quick search, genre search, sub-genre search, professional music search, classical, video) and the implementation of weighting parameters for the relevant characteristics (title, album, track, singer, new, bestseller, import and (exclusive to WOM) article number).
A further highlight of the Verity Technology is the support of a "fuzzy" search. If, for example, a singer's name is entered phonetically due to lack of knowledge of the correct spelling, a ‘soundex operator' ensures that the search is successful, even for some modern rap groups where the written name and the pronunciation differ greatly.
Linear scalability is one of the strengths of the K2 solution. Verity uses parallel brokers and servers which ensure an equal load distribution. The brokers direct the user questions to the most suitable server. A large number of hardware junctions is also supported, with the multi-processing features of leading hardware manufacturers being used. The parallel data architecture also works with duplicated index data stock which can be located on any of the servers. The multi-layered parallel computing architecture from K2 thus secures the investments already made by the customer.
"The scalability was not only important for WOM, in order to use the hardware optimally, but also because, with the Internet, the company has opened a marketing tool which makes targeted campaigns much simpler than conventional sales methods" explains Dario Schmidt, general manager of Verity Deutschland GmbH. If this potential is exploited, experience shows that the traffic on the site can easily be increased many times over. And then the connected systems, using the Verity Tools, are in a position to deliver a balanced service and equal response times."
With the solution from Verity and Kabel New Media Friedrichshafen, WOM has achieved a very high level of customer satisfaction which can be seen from the number of return orders. Future projects will therefore be realised with the same partners, according to statements from WOM.
