Express Newspapers optimises archive access with Verity's advanced business portal infrastructure software
SUNNYVALE, CA. - 2001-03-22 - Verity, the company powering business portals, announces that it has been chosen by the Express Newspapers Group to implement Verity Information Server. This advanced portal infrastructure software will give journalists full access to archive copies of a broad range of UK media titles as well as full PDF versions of The Express, Sunday Express and Daily Star. The Express Newspapers Group is integrating the Verity technology into its new in-house developed system, and plans to implement Verity Knowledge Organizer as the next phase of development.
Verity was chosen primarily for its speed and accuracy. Its integration into the Express Newspapers Group's system means that information held in the archive will be automatically indexed and categorised. Combined with Verity's powerful retrieval capabilities, including indexing, searching and categorising of information, journalists will be able to find the information they are looking for quickly and easily.
"In our previous archive system we were only able to store bitmap images of the text, not the actual text itself," says Peter Everiss, deputy IT director at Express Newspapers. "It was also extremely labour intensive to scan the pages in manually and then index the keywords, which limited the number of documents we were able to store. The new system is cross-platform and web-enabled and the addition of a free text search capability will automatically improve the volume of content the system can handle. We are now expanding the use of Verity technology into a more general content management system for all our corporate information and images."
"Access to archive material is extremely important in an information-led industry such as journalism," adds Simon Atkinson, managing director, Verity GB Ltd. "The Express Newspapers Group has realised that it is crucial for all employees to be able to take advantage of the knowledge within the company and has recognised the power of Verity's technologies to assist them."
