XML-Based eForm Management System Introduced by Cardiff; Enables Paperless Forms Using Standard Web Clients

LiquidForms™ allows organizations to route, approve, submit and sign online forms; The new product is based upon Cardiff's work within W3C XForms Working Group

San Diego - 2001-03-12 - Cardiff Software, Inc., a leader in eBusiness automation solutions, today announced the LiquidForms eForm Management System. LiquidForms works with Adobe® Acrobat® 5.0 and other standard Web clients to deliver a paperless forms automation solution without the additional use of plug-ins or Java™ filler applets.

LiquidForms is used to publish forms into an online automated system using Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and HTML standards. Once implemented, users can access the organization's centralized eForm repository through standard Web browsers, and can use the system to route, approve and sign online forms. Data from completed forms can be directly processed into ERP, HR, database and other back office applications.

"The combination of Acrobat 5.0 and LiquidForms is a compelling solution for eBusiness and eGovernment organizations," said Joe Eschbach, vice president, ePaper Solutions Group for Adobe. "LiquidForms and Acrobat 5.0 resolve the technology limitations which have slowed the adoption of historical approaches to paperless forms."

Paperless forms processing offers a significant benefit to business and government users. Various industry studies, including one outlined in Bill Gates' book Business @ The Speed of Thought, show that products like the LiquidForms eForm Management System can save organizations up to $150 per form when compared to paper forms. Recent eGovernment initiatives, including the Government Paper Elimination Act and the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, have also accelerated interest in eForms at local, state and federal agencies.

There has been significant industry support for the standards-based approach that Cardiff and Adobe have taken with their eForm Alliance. Among the organizations applauding the open systems approach to eForm management are Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: SUNW), a leader in open systems, and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. "LiquidForms is an excellent example of a Java technology based application for an open standards environment," said Rick Saletta, group marketing manager, Enterprise Java Technologies, Sun Microsystems. "Java Servlets, XML and Adobe PDF combine to make LiquidForms a potentially killer Web platform for the government."

"LiquidForms looks like an excellent product," said a Senior Technical Printing Specialist for the United States Internal Revenue Service. "I applaud the use of open standards like XML, HTML and PDF to automate eForms. Cardiff and Adobe are showing excellent industry leadership with their eForm Alliance."

Technology Shift to XML and n-Tier eForms

LiquidForms represents a technology shift in the eForm automation product segment, where historical vendors include Jetform Corporation (NASDAQ: FORM) and Shana Corporation. Where historical client-server eForm approaches rely upon a proprietary form design format, LiquidForms uses XML, Adobe PDF and HTML standards. Where client-server products require proprietary plug-ins and Java filler applets for form presentation, LiquidForms uses universally accepted Web clients for form fill and routing: Microsoft® Internet ExplorerTM, Netscape NavigatorTM and Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Acrobat ReaderTM. And where historical products have wrapped their legacy products with a proprietary flavor of XML, Cardiff has leveraged its role as a technical editor for the XForms Specification for the World Wide Web Consortium into LiquidForms.

About LiquidForms, Availability and Pricing

The LiquidForms eForm Management System is comprised of the LiquidForms Designer, which empowers office workers and form owners with the ability to create and publish online forms right from their desktop; the LiquidForms Web Server, for centralized routing, processing and administration of online forms; and the LiquidForms Web Desktop, which distributes automated forms capabilities to the global worker community through standard Web desktop applications.

A free download of the LiquidForms Designer Trial Edition (TE) is available now at www.Cardiff.com/LiquidForms. In a related announcement, Adobe Systems (NASDAQ: ADBE) today announced as part of the Adobe Acrobat 5.0 release, Adobe is offering the English version of LiquidForms Designer TE for Microsoft WindowsTM. LiquidForms Designer for Microsoft Windows will ship in May 2001, with a list price of $1,000 per seat with volume discounts.
