Delmar Uses Virage to Distribute Educational Videos over the Internet
Virage Technology Enables Streaming Video Purchases via Subscription Model
SAN MATEO, Calif - February 26, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of software and services that enable video for strategic online applications, today announced that Delmar, a division of Thomson Learning, will use the Virage Video Application Platform to extend their distribution channel by delivering their traditional video training products over the Internet. The project will create a searchable and comprehensive video database that encompasses every genre in Delmar's library, allowing customers to search for relevant educational videos then select clips they wish to purchase on a subscription basis. Virage integration into the website will dramatically reduce distribution costs for the company, increase the reach of their assets and provide users with instant access to a valuable educational tool.
Delmar is the leading provider of education products and services for the health care, technology and trades, and career education markets. They offer skill-based learning in print, video, CD-ROM and online courses to customers in the education sector and the corporate environment. Due to the nature of their content and widespread selection of materials, Delmar can provide training to customers from ages 16 to 60 in fields ranging from nursing to the automotive industry.
Delmar will use Virage's unique SmartEncode™ process to index, encode and prepare over 150 hours of instructional videos for sale in a pay-per-view and subscription format on the Delmar website. The new Virage-powered video distribution process eliminates duplication and shipping costs and allows for instantaneous retrieval of the videos by customers.
"This project with Virage is one of Delmar's most strategic projects to date," said Greg Burnell, Delmar's president and CEO. "As a leading provider of lifelong learning solutions, we're always looking for innovative ways to deliver our products and services. When streaming video is set up in a pay-per-view format over the Internet, it benefits us directly through a more efficient distribution model and benefits the consumer through quick and easy access to the content they need, when they need it."
"Using Virage technology, Delmar is making it easier for their customers to purchase relevant video content in a simple way," said Carlos Montalvo, chief marketing officer at Virage. "This Virage-enabled initiative allows Delmar to utilize the convenience of streaming video for a more profitable distribution of their video assets."
