Autonomy Announces Seagate as New Customer for its Infrastructure Technology
Autonomy to power automated intranet and extranet for 15,000 users that allows single access point for multiple corporate repositories of information
San Francisco, Calif. - February 13, 2001 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; EASDAQ: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a global leader in infrastructure software for the Web and the enterprise, today announced that Seagate Technology, the world's leading provider of Internet Infrastructure storage technology, has purchased Autonomy's technology to power its North American employee intranet and partner extranet sites. With Autonomy's Server™, Seagate will be able to automate the process of organizing and hypertext linking information from multiple sources including Lotus Notes, ODBC databases and the Web, and make it easier for Seagate's 15,000 users to retrieve the most up-to-date product and service information.
Seagate selected Autonomy's infrastructure software to replace keyword-based solutions. Autonomy's infrastructure technology utilizes powerful advanced pattern recognition technology, which can identify the main concepts within a piece of text, and provides more accurate content organization and information retrieval.
With Autonomy's technology, users will be able to retrieve highly relevant information when they submit an inquiry to the Intranet. For example, from one point of access, users can retrieve internal product information data sheets, a news article from the Web about competitive products and a report from the research laboratory, because Autonomy's technology automatically links related content together based on the content's ideas.
The Seagate.com intranet and its extranet for resellers contain product and program information, which must be updated as new technologies are deployed. With Autonomy's technology, employees will not be burdened with the time-consuming task of updating and retrieving the information manually.
Autonomy CEO Dr. Michael Lynch commented that Autonomy provides a highly scaleable and automated solution for managing and delivering vast amounts of information. "Seagate is the largest manufacturer of disc drives, magnetic discs and read-write heads, and a developer of business intelligence software, with product and corporate divisions throughout the world," said Lynch. "They needed a technology that could accommodate large numbers of corporate users in different geographic locations and multiple sources of company, product and market information. Autonomy's technology automates these processes and it is language-independent."
About Autonomy Corporation plc
Autonomy's infrastructure technology enables computers to understand a piece of text, Web pages, e-mails, voice, documents, video and people. Because of this unique ability, Autonomy's technology automates business operations on unstructured information, such as categorizing, linking, personalizing and delivering operations, which, to date, have been completely manual. Autonomy's technology powers any application dependent upon unstructured information including e-commerce, customer relationship management, knowledge management, enterprise information portals and online publishing.
Among Autonomy's 425-plus customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, BBC, British Aerospace, Clorox, Reed Elsevier, News Corp., Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, SF Gate, Reuters, Semi-tech, The Royal Mail, TF1, Unilever and the United States Department of Defense. In addition, many of the world's leading software companies license Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their own products, in areas as diverse as online publishing, knowledge management, email routing and document management. These include Brio, Business Objects, Delano, Epiphany, Filenet, Intraspect, KnowledgeTrack, Nexor, Novient, OpenMarket, Sybase and Vignette.
Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, New York and Washington, D.C. in the United States, as well as offices through Europe, including Amsterdam, Brussels, Cambridge, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, Oslo, and Sydney. In July 1998, the company went public on the EASDAQ exchange (EASDAQ:AUTN). Autonomy floated on The Nasdaq National Market (NASDAQ: AUTN) in May 2000, and on the London Stock Exchange (LSE: AU.) in November 2000.
