ABCNEWS.COM AND VIRAGE TEAM UP TO BROADLY DISTRIBUTE SEARCHABLE VIDEO NEWS APPLICATION ON THE WEB
Virage to Syndicate Award-Winning Television News Programs Across the Internet
SAN MATEO, Calif - Jan. 30, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE] and ABCNEWS.com have announced that they are teaming up to syndicate the search application that will further distribute the network's award-winning news programming across the Internet. Virage's Video Application Platform and Syndication Manager™ will serve as the foundation for this endeavor. With Virage's application, continuously updated ABC News program clips, previously available only on ABCNEWS.com (NYSE:DIG), will now be accessible at multiple Internet destinations where the content will benefit a broad range of users and viewing audiences.
"We are excited to be working with Virage to broadly distribute our broadcast news content on the Internet," said Bernard Gershon, senior vice president and general manager of ABCNEWS.com. "Virage's syndication capabilities allow ubiquitous, yet secure, distribution of our video content. Through this partnership, we can further enhance the value of our television broadcasts through personalized and on-demand viewing, anywhere, anytime. Virage has pioneered a comprehensive syndication system that enables ABC News to reach more viewers with information tailored to their needs, while at the same time creating a viable, revenue driven business model for the distribution of video on the Internet."
ABC News currently uses the Virage platform to index and publish searchable video clips from Nightline, World News Tonight and Sam Donaldson @ ABCNEWS.com on ABCNEWS.com. With this agreement, Virage and ABC News will broadly distribute on the Internet both daily TV news content and past ABC News coverage. Using the Virage Syndication Manager, ABC News clips can now be distributed to affiliates, news agencies, schools and any other applicable websites where premier ABC News videos are relevant to each audience. On a daily basis, Virage will capture, SmartEncode™ and automatically create ABC News clips specifically packaged to fit the needs of each syndication partner, assuring secure, bandwidth-friendly distribution and integration into affiliate online applications.
"We are seeing more and more large media companies turning to Virage to utilize our unique syndication capabilities to expand the reach of their video content," said Paul Lego, president and CEO of Virage. "By giving a wide range of viewers targeted and personalized ways to access news clips or explore topics of interest, ABCNEWS.com is demonstrating how the value of broadcast video can grow when published and distributed over the Internet. Virage-enabled streaming video syndication on the Web is changing the way that audiences gather information and how organizations, like ABC News, publicize their news to the world."
