Autonomy Concludes Major New Deal with Royal &SunAlliance

Royal &SunAlliance deploys Autonomy's technology for enterprise information and B2B services following a successful separate commercial implementation

CAMBRIDGE, England, 25 January 2001 - Autonomy, a leading provider of infrastructure software for the Web and the enterprise, today announced a substantial extension of its relationship with Royal &SunAlliance, one of the world's largest multinational insurance groups. This will enable Royal &SunAlliance to deploy Autonomy's technology to power enterprise information systems within the organization, a range of B2B services delivered over the Web as well as services offered to customers.

This is the second sale of Autonomy's technology to Royal &SunAlliance. Autonomy was previously deployed by Royal &SunAlliance in a separate implementation to power Usecolor.com, the uniquely comprehensive online service dedicated to helping Britain's SMEs to find everyday practical help and solutions to enable them to save time and money.

Royal &SunAlliance is currently present in over 50 countries and has the ability to transact business in over 130. The enterprise phase of the rollout will use Autonomy to automatically aggregate, categorise, personalise and deliver information to support business decisions across this organization, from many disparate data sources, including office documents, Web pages, intranet content, newsfeeds, e-mails, and presentations. The B2B element of the agreement will enable Royal &SunAlliance to enhance the financial and insurance services it offers to businesses by automatically linking related products and services together, and delivering offers based on users' interests.

Dr. Mike Lynch, founder and Group CEO of Autonomy, said: "This new sale is very positive news for Autonomy and builds on our earlier relationship with Royal &SunAlliance in the Usecolor implementation. The new sale serves some exciting areas of Royal &SunAlliance's endeavours and makes them one of Autonomy's most important customers. We are delighted to be working with Royal &SunAlliance again."

Richard Illingworth, Group Systems Manager at Royal &SunAlliance, said "Royal &SunAlliance is forging ahead and making the most of the opportunities afforded by the new economy, as has been shown by our Usecolor service.

We are now moving ahead to apply this technology throughout the Group to help us exploit our knowledge base, achieve increased productivity and further enhance customer service. Autonomy helps us to concentrate on our core business by automating the processes that act on our information."

At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze a piece of text (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It can then automatically categorise, link, personalise and deliver that information. The technology is used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.

About Autonomy Corporation plc

Autonomy's infrastructure technology enables computers to form an understanding of a piece of text, Web pages, e-mails, voice, documents and people. Because of this unique ability, Autonomy's technology automates business operations on unstructured information, such as categorising, linking, personalising and delivering, which, to date, have been completely manual. Autonomy's technology powers any application dependent upon unstructured information including: e-commerce, customer relationship management, knowledge management, enterprise information portals and online publishing.

Among Autonomy's 425-plus customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, BBC, British Aerospace, Clorox, Reed Elsevier, News Corp., Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, SF Gate, Reuters, Semi-tech, The Royal Mail, TF1, Unilever and the United States Department of Defense. In addition, many of the world's leading software companies license Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their own products, in areas as diverse as online publishing, knowledge management, email routing and document management. These include Brio, Business Objects, Delano, Epiphany, Filenet, Hyperwave, Insight, Intranet Solutions, Intraspect, KnowledgeTrack, Nexor, Novient, OpenMarket, Sybase and Vignette.

Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices throughout North America and Europe, as well as in Sydney, Australia. Autonomy listed on EASDAQ (EASDAQ:AUTN) in July 1998, on The Nasdaq National Market (NASDAQ: AUTN) in May 2000 and on the London Stock Exchange (LSE:AU.) in November 2000.
