ITALY'S LARGEST TELEVISION BROADCASTER MEDIASET TO REVOLUTIONIZE ITS NEWSROOM WITH VIRAGE SOFTWARE
Mediaset Will Use Virage VideoLogger and AudioLogger to Bring Video to Journalists' Desktops in Four Simple Steps
SAN MATEO, Calif - Jan. 24, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [Nasdaq: VRGE], a leading provider of software and services that enable video for strategic online applications, today announced that Mediaset S.p.A., Italy's largest commercial television operator, will be building one of the most advanced digital newsrooms in Europe, using the latest Virage technology.
The broadcaster will utilize the Virage SmartEncode™ process, based on the VideoLogger® and AudioLogger™ software, as the critical starting point for its new all digital news automation and archiving system. Mediaset's newly devised digital newsroom will use Virage's video products as the front end of an Informix Media360 content management system, helping to revolutionize the production workflow.
"Virage technology enables our team at Mediaset to deploy one of the world's most advanced news and archive systems." said Manlio Cruciatti, Chief Technology Officer for Mediaset. "The speed and ease of access to both incoming and archived video footage will enable our journalists to produce programs far more creatively and efficiently. The Virage-enabled system allows us to dramatically improve the way we produce and deliver our television content."
Mark Rattley, General Manager for Virage Europe, added: "We are proud that Mediaset has chosen Virage as its preferred provider of mission-critical video indexing and cataloging components. Mediaset's system fundamentally changes the way news is produced, deployed and distributed by broadcasters. VideoLogger and the Virage SmartEncode process also give Mediaset an advantage over competitors by converting broadcast content into searchable and interactive video that can be easily deployed on the Web."
The process can be outlined in four simple stages of activity:
First, all news content will be automatically and continuously SmartEncoded by Virage's award winning VideoLogger software as stage one of the process
Stage two, the resulting data - keyframes, speech transcriptions, etc. - will be placed in a central database, along with MPEG4 video, available to all Mediaset journalists via their desktop computers
Then, stage three, journalists will be able to search the index generated by Virage's VideoLogger through a normal web browser, enabling them to instantly access and watch selected video clips using Microsoft's Windows Media Player
Stage four, once the right clips are found and assembled, they can then be edited and broadcast at a higher resolution using Sony Video Servers
