Business Objects and Autonomy Announce Strategic Oem Licensing Agreement
Business Objects to automate the aggregation and delivery of critical business information with Autonomy's software
San Francisco, Calif. and San Jose, Calif. - January 18, 2001 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; EASDAQ: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a global leader in infrastructure software for the Web and the enterprise, and Business Objects (NASDAQ: BOBJ), the world's leading provider of e-business intelligence (e-BI) solutions, today announced a licensing agreement whereby Business Objects will integrate Autonomy's software infrastructure technology into future releases of the Business Objects e-BI software. With this agreement, Business Objects plans to use Autonomy's infrastructure technology in the next version of BUSINESSOBJECTS™ INFOVIEW, the company's business intelligence portal (BIP) that collects and consolidates a company's business intelligence (BI) information and presents it in a secure, focused, and personalized view to users inside and outside an organization.
Autonomy's concept-based infrastructure technology enables computers to understand unstructured information and identify and rank the main ideas within it. Because of this ability, Autonomy's technology automates business operations on unstructured information such as categorizing, linking, personalizing and delivering, which to date, have been completely manual.
BUSINESSOBJECTS INFOVIEW provides a single point of secured access to BI information, including business intelligence documents such as BUSINESSOBJECTS and WEBINTELLIGENCE™ reports as well as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and PDF or ZIP files. With the integration of Autonomy's infrastructure technology capability into INFOVIEW, customers will be able to find their BI information within all documents in INFOVIEW, for example search the column headings and content of a report. This will allow BUSINESSOBJECTS INFOVIEW to extend its reach on unstructured information, enabling customers to automatically retrieve business critical information from desktop documents to enhance the understanding of their BI information.
"We're seeing an increase in the amount of value that companies are finding in their unstructured data. Whereas in the past most companies focused on the management of databases and structured information, today companies are also seeing the value of accessing unstructured information and combining the two formats in the same report," said Mike Lynch, CEO of Autonomy. "In today's economy, unstructured information, i.e., email, Web pages, and other documents, is just as important as structured information. In order to gain business intelligence from all formats, enterprises must also have applications that automatically manage both structured and unstructured information the process. We look forward to working with Business Objects to add this capability to their business intelligence portal."
"Our highly leveraged business model is built upon growing OEM and partner alliances, which allows us to scale revenues and market share through relationships with leading global technology companies who embed our technology in their products," said Lynch. "With the addition of Business Objects, we now have 40 OEM alliances selling our technology throughout the world."
"We're very pleased to announce this relationship with Autonomy and look forward to joining forces on future versions of our award winning product line," said Bernard Liautaud, president and CEO of Business Objects. "We realize the importance of providing concept-based automation for all the information a customer would need for their BI analysis, be it structured Business Objects reports or other documents. Working closely with Autonomy, we will provide customers with an easier way of reaching a bigger portion of business critical information, to help them get faster, more refined, and direct access to all the relevant data they need for business analysis."

About Business Objects
Business Objects is the world's leading provider of e-business intelligence (e-BI) solutions. The company coined the term e-business intelligence in 1998 to describe the intersection of business intelligence and the internet. Using e-business intelligence, organizations can access, analyze, and share information in intranet, extranet, and e-business environments. In intranets, the company's products provide employees with information to make better business decisions, and are used in environments ranging from workgroups of 20 users to enterprise deployments exceeding 20,000. In the extranet environment, the company is pioneering the use of e-BI in applications that allow organizations to build stronger relationships by linking customers, partners, and suppliers via the internet. In addition, the company's products can improve the performance of an e-business by providing reporting and analysis against the ever-expanding amount of transaction and profile data that is collected each day throughout the world wide web.
Founded in 1990, Business Objects pioneered the modern business intelligence industry by inventing and patenting a "semantic layer" that insulates users from the technical complexity of database systems. Today, the company has over 11,500 customers in more than 80 countries. The company's stock is publicly traded under the ticker symbols NASDAQ: BOBJ and Euronext Paris: code SICOVAM 12074, and included in the SBF 120 and IT CAC 50 French stock market indexes.
