Finnish Telecommunications Leader Chooses Autonomy to Power Enterprise Information System
Sonera automates business intelligence for 6,000 users across the global enterprise
CAMBRIDGE, England, 11 January 2001 - Autonomy, a leading provider of infrastructure software for the Web and the enterprise, today announced that its technology has been adopted by Finnish telecommunications leader Sonera to power an enterprise information system that will serve 6,000 users across the globe, including 500 in the Business Intelligence Unit.
Sonera, which has over 13,000,000 clients across the world for both fixed and mobile services, will use Autonomy's technology to automatically aggregate, categorise, hypertext link, personalise and deliver information from multiple sources, including intranet content, Internet pages, office documents, e-mails and Lotus Notes databases. In this way, Autonomy will enable Sonera's users to make supported business decisions based on material that is of relevance to their expertise and role, without any manual intervention in the process.
At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyse text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It can then automatically categorise, link, personalise and deliver that information. The technology is used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.
Dr. Mike Lynch, founder and Group CEO of Autonomy, said: "Sonera's adoption of Autonomy's technology is very positive news for us. It demonstrates that in a world where digital information is growing at an alarming rate, businesses have realised that there is a need to tame the chaos and that a technology exists which is able to do this. As this realisation grows, Autonomy is set to become the de facto standard by which businesses efficiently extract real value from their information."
Tom Sandell, CTO of Sonera, said: "Autonomy has enabled us to take our information and make it work for each individual user, without any manual intervention. We believe that this will bring benefits to our business intelligence and decision support processes which would be unattainable using any other technology."
About Autonomy Corporation
Autonomy's infrastructure technology enables computers to form an understanding of a piece of text, Web pages, e-mails, voice, documents and people. Because of this unique ability, Autonomy's technology automates business operations on unstructured information, such as categorising, linking, personalising and delivering operations, which, to date, have been completely manual. Autonomy's technology powers any application dependent upon unstructured information including: e-commerce, customer relationship management, knowledge management, enterprise information portals and online publishing.
Among Autonomy's 390-plus customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, BBC, British Aerospace, Clorox, Reed Elsevier, News Corp., Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, SF Gate, Reuters, Semi-tech, The Royal Mail, TF1, Unilever and the United States Department of Defense. In addition, many of the world's leading software companies license Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their own products, in areas as diverse as online publishing, knowledge management, email routing and document management. These include Vignette, Sybase, Corechange, Brio, Delano, Epiphany, Filenet, Hyperwave, Insight, Intranet Solutions, Intraspect, KnowledgeTrack, Nexor, Novient and OpenMarket.
Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, New York, Toronto and Washington, D.C. in North America, as well as offices through Europe, including Amsterdam, Brussels, Cambridge, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, Oslo, and Sydney. In July 1998, the company went public on the EASDAQ exchange (EASDAQ:AUTN). Autonomy floated on The Nasdaq National Market (NASDAQ: AUTN) in May 2000, and on the London Stock Exchange (LSE: AU.) in November 2000.
About Sonera
Sonera is an innovative telecommunications expert and aims to become a major force in the international market. Its strength lies in the diversity of its operations, which cover both fixed network and mobile communications and services. It also cooperates closely with partners who are world leaders in their own fields. Rapid growth in the use of mobile phones presents an excellent opportunity for Sonera to further expand its wireless services.
Sonera's business growth will increasingly be derived from services. The company has already gained valuable experience in providing services on the highly developed Finnish market and is able to utilize this expertise in international markets, where it is already actively involved. Through associated companies, Sonera has over 13 million mobile communications customers.
Sonera's role as a fixed network operator is also an important part of its business. Sonera's goal is to become the leading fixed network and data traffic operator in the Baltic region. Sonera is already cooperating closely with fixed network telecommunications companies in Russia, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
Continuous development is an essential part of Sonera's expertise. Sonera was amongst the first to launch several innovative services, such as the now common text messaging services, a security solution for mobile commerce and transactions, and services which make use of positioning information.
Sonera already possesses a third generation mobile communications license for Finland and, through its associated companies, for Germany and Spain. It also plans to submit other applications on a selective basis. Sonera expects 3G services to be launched towards the end of 2001.
