H.W. Wilson Company Selects Verity to Power the New WilsonWeb Site - the Premier Reference Resource for Librarians and Researchers

Verity Technology Offers High-Speed, Precise Knowledge Retrieval and Supports Natural Language Queries

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and NEW YORK, NY - 2001-01-08 - Verity, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, and the H.W. Wilson Company, the premier publisher of Web, CD-ROM and print references for librarians and researchers worldwide, today announced that Verity technology has been selected to power the new version of the WilsonWeb which is targeted for deployment in 2001. The WilsonWeb database server offers more than 40 periodical databases - full-text, abstracts, and index sources - on a subscription basis. The databases focus on biography, business, the humanities, general science, the social sciences, research for young people, as well as extensive general-interest information repositories covering diverse academic specialties. Verity's high-performance portal infrastructure technologies, including Verity® K2 Toolkit, Verity Developer's Kit, and Verity Profiler, were selected to power the new site because of their flexibility, scalability, support for natural language queries and full-text search as well as relevancy ranking capabilities.

"H.W. Wilson currently offers over six million entries from over 4,000 periodicals and books. Having reliable and high-performance knowledge retrieval is critical to the success of our Web site," said Ron Miller, director of product management for H.W. Wilson. "Verity technology is highly robust, scalable and fast. It also supports natural language queries, as well as automatic synonym searching. Verity helps us to team the power of advanced technology with the expertise of the Wilson staff to connect people with information worldwide."

The H.W. Wilson Company has been a leading provider of electronic and print information to librarians and researchers for over 100 years. Its online site, WilsonWeb, provides enhanced navigation and site-search capabilities, daily dynamic content, online technical support, and quick access to important information on all of Wilson's electronic and print products. WilsonWeb citations deliver an abundance of bibliographic information, in-depth article abstracts, full text articles, and pdf page images. Users can search for information pertaining to a topic of interest, then print, download, or email the selected articles.

"H.W. Wilson has been providing an invaluable service for librarians and researchers for over a century," said Mike Zuckerman, vice president of marketing for Verity. "Its Web-based approach is a natural extension of its print-based services, and enables a dramatic increase in its customers' ability to find documents quickly and accurately. WilsonWeb also brings added value to the education industry by providing a catalog service to worldwide libraries and making recommendations on books and publications. We're honored that our technology has been chosen by this venerable organization to power their next-generation site."

About the Verity K2 Toolkit

Verity K2 Toolkit allows brokered searches across multiple servers and multiple CPUs to provide the most relevant search results from many information sources without sacrificing the speed or accuracy of the results displayed. As the number of users, queries, or amount of data increases, K2 applications can keep pace with increased demands by adding new CPUs or servers to the network without bringing down the application. Providing 24x7 fault tolerant operations, the Verity K2 Toolkit isolates failures of individual nodes or servers from the rest of the system, ensuring that applications are available when they are needed.

The Verity K2 Toolkit also supports Active Server Pages/COM and Java™, allowing easy integration across a wide range of application servers and Java environments, including Microsoft IIS/Site Server, Weblogic, iPlanet, Websphere, Java Server Pages, and Apache with JServ. With Industry-standard C language and Perl APIs, Verity's K2 Toolkit helps speed application deployment and gives corporate accounts added flexibility in application development, especially for e-commerce and business-to-business application solutions.

About the Verity Developer's Kit

The Verity Developer's Kit (VDK) is market-leading software for building custom knowledge retrieval applications, helping customers to automatically analyze and intelligently refine their Web-based searches. Verity's technology uses a combination of full text, metadata and knowledge-based methods to index and retrieve textual information stored in a variety of formats across corporate intranets and the Internet. The VDK enables the organization and relevance ranking of selected information, thereby allowing users to filter and evaluate information personalized to their specific needs and interests. VDK also provides the supporting technology for the Verity K2 Toolkit which delivers around-the-clock availability and scalable, high-performance throughput for thousands of users searching over tens of millions of documents with sub-second responses.

About the Verity Profiler

The Verity Profiler is a high-performance engine used to classify documents. The Profiler compares a stream of documents to a set of stored queries or Topics, and does high-speed matching between documents and queries. The Profiler can be used to develop messaging, routing and classification systems, or other applications that trigger a business process on the basis of a document's content.
