State of Iowa Selects Virage for Information Sharing Project

21st Century Learning Infrastructure Initiative Will Be Built on Virage Platform

SAN MATEO, Calif - Jan. 3, 2001 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE] a leading provider of software products and application services that enable video for the Internet, today announced that the State of Iowa will use the Virage Video Application Platform as the foundation for an initiative that will allow Iowa citizens to access searchable state digital video content for educational purposes. The 21st Century Learning Infrastructure Initiative will use Virage software to encode, index and catalog digital video and audio assets to allow for their distribution and sharing between K-12 schools, community colleges, universities and other citizens who are looking to utilize information contained within videos compiled and licensed by the state.

The 21st Century Learning Infrastructure Initiative will create a standard instrument for knowledge transfer through a system whereby Iowa citizens can easily search and retrieve archived state video resources. It will serve as a combination of both a digital library and a virtual open campus for all learners and institutions. Using Virage, digital videos ranging from seminars to demonstrations will be encoded into indexed and searchable streaming video clips and simultaneously published onto the Iowa State web site. Upon entering an ID and password, authorized users will be able to efficiently and painlessly access video content for educational purposes. "The Virage platform will allow the state to standardize metadata creation and search ability of the content, so that citizens across Iowa are able to retrieve the content they need anywhere they need it," said Bill Haigh, Public Information Officer of the Information Technology Department for the State of Iowa.

The 21st Century Learning Infrastructure Initiative is an effort to enhance and increase current and future distance learning and digital library offerings thereby enabling all citizens of the state of Iowa the increased opportunity to partake in quality life-long learning. Haigh also believes that its implementation and success could pioneer new ways that educational videos and information in general can be shared between states and citizens nationwide in the future, with Virage playing a critical role at the center of its foundation: "We selected Virage because their experience and customer base has made them the industry standard in video-enhanced learning. Their advanced technology gives us the ability and freedom to do everything that we have envisioned for this state-wide initiative and more."

"Information sharing has always been an important two-way relationship between state schools and universities," said Carlos Montalvo, Chief Marketing Officer at Virage "Iowa's new Virage-enabled initiative not only benefits the broad university community, but any citizen who wishes to directly interact with and access their state government's video archive for information. Virage is pleased to provide the platform that is changing the way people share video-based information with each other."
