Verity and Ricoh Silicon Valley Join Forces to Ensure that Business-Critical Documents Are Never Lost

Verity Developer's Kit Powers Leading Network Office Appliance, eCabinet, Enabling Easy Accessibility to All Documents Created by Networked Office Peripherals

SUNNYVALE and CUPERTINO, Calif. - 2000-12-18 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, and Ricoh Silicon Valley, Inc. (RSV), a pioneer in a new class of products called Network Office Appliances, announced today they have teamed to provide customers with easy, secure access to business-critical documents. RSV has deployed the Verity Developer's Kit (VDK) as its core information processing and linguistic analysis solution because of its advanced search features, performance, scalability, flexibility and precision. Additionally, RSV will use Verity Locales technology to roll out the European versions of eCabinet next year.

"Our goal is to make network office appliance an integral part of small businesses and corporate workgroups throughout the world," said Mark Minshull, Vice President of Engineering for Ricoh Silicon Valley. "Verity is key to our eCabinet offering by enabling us to provide our customers with easy retrieval of business-critical information. We did an extensive evaluation initially, including a ‘make versus buy' assessment and Verity emerged the clear leader. The VDK can handle the continuous input of documents to our databases. In addition, Verity supports our platform of choice - OpenSource UNIX. The combined power of eCabinet and Verity's search technology reduces information overload for workers and saves both time and money for our customers."

eCabinet is the first network office appliance to automatically capture, consolidate, digitally file, and quickly retrieve important office documents like emails, faxes, photocopies, scans, printouts and Web content. Using TCP/IP, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), auto-indexing, and browser-based technology, eCabinet securely aggregates documents, extracts essential information to create a detailed index, archives a digital copy (via internal hard drive and built-in DVD-RAM), and allows for simple end-user retrieval via a Web browser interface. The eCabinet solution is designed for the small office and corporate workgroup markets, which includes approximately seven million workgroups in the United States. These customers desire solutions that can be set up without expensive consulting or IT support. eCabinet allows customers to access and exchange paper and electronic documents with the characteristic ease-of-use and power that distinguishes all of Ricoh's digital office products, enabling users to better leverage personnel resources while improving their productivity.

"RSV has delivered a unique solution for small businesses and departmental workgroups - transforming technology research results into practical solutions that customers can use by changing office machines from mere paper processors into 'intelligent‘ assistants that can enhance their efficiency," said Anthony Bettencourt, President of Verity. "Studies have shown that administrative staff spend an average of 20 to 30 percent of their time searching for missing documents and that an average office could spend up to $18,000 or more annually locating and retrieving lost and misfiled documents. eCabinet provides an easy, intuitive, and secure method for storing and indexing valuable information automatically. We're extremely pleased that RSV selected our VDK technology as the strategic element that enables customers to quickly locate these documents by any number of search and retrieval options."

The Verity Developer's Kit (VDK) is market-leading software for building custom knowledge retrieval applications, helping customers to automatically analyze and intelligently refine their Web-based searches. Verity's technology uses a combination of full text, metadata and knowledge-based methods to index and retrieve textual information stored in a variety of formats across corporate intranets and the Internet. The VDK enables the organization and relevance ranking of selected information, thereby allowing users to filter and evaluate information personalized to their specific needs and interests. VDK also provides the supporting technology for the Verity K2 Toolkit which delivers around-the-clock availability and scalable, high-performance throughput for thousands of users searching over tens of millions of documents with sub-second responses.

Verity Locales employ the use of morphological analyses and advanced linguistic tools to conduct language-specific tokenization, stemming, word-breaking, stop-word filtering, and noun / phrase detection functions where applicable. By supporting a diverse number of scripts, character sets, and code pages, Verity customers will have the same high level of functionality within the business portals, regardless of the locale that they use. Verity is currently shipping 24 Asian and European language locales. These include simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean for Asian languages and Arabic, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian (Bokmal), Norwegian (Nynorsk), Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish for European and Middle Eastern languages.
