Verity Teams With IBM on New Offering To Provide a Foundation For Connecting People to Knowledge

Verity K2 Toolkit to Be Integrated With IBM Corporate Portal Offering

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2000-12-14 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, today announced that it is working with IBM Global Services (NYSE: IBM) on a new offering to deliver a range of business and technical services for the development of high value portals. IBM's Corporate Portal Offering will include specific tools and techniques to customize levels of content and function for each customer. Verity's advanced knowledge retrieval solution, the K2 Toolkit, was selected as a key infrastructure component of IBM's Corporate Portal services because of its scalability, flexibility, accuracy, high performance, and functionality that helps users navigate large volumes of information efficiently. In addition, in support of IBM's Corporate Portal services, Verity has provided global training on the K2 Toolkit to IBM's Knowledge and Content Management consultants and architects.

"After extensive research on the portal marketplace, our mission was to create the Corporate Portal Offering as a complete framework - including methodology, approach, and best-of-breed technology partnerships - for identifying and implementing the best portal solutions for our clients," said Scott Smith, Global Executive for IBM Knowledge and Content Management Services. "Reliable and high-performance knowledge retrieval technology is a critical component of any portal. With over a decade of experience in knowledge management and portal infrastructure technology, Verity is a leader in this space."

According to Anthony J. Bettencourt, president of Verity, "Corporate portals provide a unified, highly productive working environment for individuals, teams and communities. This portal environment can span industries, market segments, and geographies, and can be B-to-B, B-to-C, or business-to-employee - allowing users to be more efficient, take advantage of new opportunities, and survive competitive environments by making more effective use of their information. We're honored that, under our agreement with IBM, we will contribute our industry-leading technology as a key component of the Corporate Portal Offering for IBM's customers."

Verity provides market-leading software for building custom knowledge retrieval applications, helping customers to automatically analyze and intelligently refine their Web-based searches. Verity's technology uses a combination of full text, metadata and knowledge-based methods to index and retrieve textual information stored in a variety of formats across corporate intranets and the Internet. It enables the organization and relevance ranking of selected information, thereby allowing users to filter and evaluate information personalized to their specific needs and interests. Verity technology delivers around-the-clock availability and scalable, high-performance throughput for thousands of users searching over tens of millions of documents with sub-second response.

IBM's Corporate Portal Offering provides businesses a framework for creating dynamic, personalized workspaces for its employees. With these services, a company can develop a work environment incorporating all the necessary office elements, as well as providing employees connections to resources and information unique to an individual's specific job requirements. An employee in engineering, for example, would have, in a single working environment, access to design programs, word processing applications, e-mail, databases of information needed by only the company's engineers, discussion boards and team rooms relevant to his work, the research of outside engineers that might be relevant to a current project, and the Internet. The portal also identifies others in the organization with relevant experience, knowledge, or information, and could provide instant messaging access to those people.
