Virage Enables New Advances in University Distance Learning

University of Illinois School of Public Health Integrates Virage Video Application Platform into Distance Education Programs

SAN MATEO, CA - December 4, 2000 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of software products and application services that enable video for the Internet, today announced that The Center for Advancement of Distance Education (CADE) at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health will use the Virage platform to improve the way educators integrate video into their curriculum and exchange information with other agencies. Virage software gives the Center the ability to maximize the use of its educational video assets as well as easily share valuable video-based information with the surrounding medical and public health communities, enhancing the overall education process.

The Center currently videotapes lectures, conference presentations, and training sessions for a variety of clients, including academics and professionals in the fields of public health, pharmacy, and medicine. CADE has chosen the Virage Video Internet Application Platform to organize and index this extensive video library for the purpose of providing an efficient and searchable database of video clips for client and Center use. The resulting video catalog will be available to all University colleges and schools, as well as to non-University agencies and organizations wishing to incorporate relevant video clips into courses, training sessions, websites, and marketing and promotion vehicles, making it an important tool in the advancement of distance learning capabilities.

CADE videos are currently used in university and high school courses, in training sessions at federal, state, and local government agencies and national organizations, as well as in websites and online and CD-ROM marketing and promotions. "Web video has allowed us to provide the University with a cost-effective means of capturing key speakers, conference sessions, meetings, and events for use in courses and training sessions," remarked Dr. Colleen Monahan, director of CADE. "Virage is the next logical step for us since it allows organization and management of our growing online video library into an easy-to-use format. Because the Virage platform makes valuable educational materials readily accessible both on-campus and outside the University walls, it is an extremely valuable distance learning instrument." Center staff and course instructors will be better able to assess their clip lists and plan tapings for topics where fewer clips currently exist. The Virage platform helps distinct groups utilize information from the same location for different, yet equally important purposes.

"What we are seeing here is really the future of how new technology influences the way people learn, gather and share information," said Carlos Montalvo, chief marketing officer at Virage. "Specifically, Virage is pleased to provide a straight-forward way for universities, or any organization for that matter, to transform video into an integral part of an online learning experience."
