Major German Publisher Chooses Autonomy To Add Value To Online Business Publication
Net-Business magazine enables users to obtain relevant information they never knew existed
CAMBRIDGE, England - 13th October 2000 - Autonomy, the leading provider of infrastructure software for the Web, today announced that its technology has been adopted by the online magazine Net-Business to enable users to navigate information more intelligently, by automatically linking together articles that are similar in content.
Using Autonomy's technology, Net-Business Online (part of Milchstrasse, one of Germany's largest publishing houses, 1999 turnover DM 439 million) will guide users from one interesting news story to other, related stories. In this way, users gain a greater insight into their chosen topic and are able to make use of information they did not know existed, in contrast to search-based systems where the user has to type explicit phrases that tend to rule out related but useful information.
For instance, a user reading an article about broadband licences in the UK would automatically be shown a list of hyperlinks to related articles - some dealing with the same broadband issues in other countries, but also with related issues: telecommunications mergers and acquisitions, WAP and digital TV, for example. The links are created dynamically (with no pre-programmed rules) and conceptually (with no dependence on keywords.)
Ulf Heyden, editor of Net-Business Online, commented: "The need to automatically aggregate information to provide each user with a body of information around a particular topic, plus the need to personalise this information automatically to the needs of each and every user, meant there was only one option - Autonomy. In addition to providing our users with extensive news coverage, we can now also give them the capability to explore our archives conceptually, on the basis of whatever material they are reading on-screen at the time. The software actually takes over the time-consuming job of finding relevant background information."
Mike Lynch, Founder and Group CEO of Autonomy, commented: "Online press offerings in Germany are varied and innovative. This innovation needs to be accompanied by some way of automatically putting each user in touch with the information that is most useful to them. Using Autonomy, Net-Business has shown that it can make its site a much more productive place for the user to be - and this ultimately drives traffic back to that site in the future."
Net-Business is the latest addition to Autonomy's customers in the New Media publishing field, which also include Butterworths, News International, Associated Press, Knight-Ridder, WEKA, TF1, Reed Elsevier Libricum, and Belga.
About Autonomy
Autonomy's technology powers large-scale, personalised systems to support the infrastructure of the Internet economy, across areas including knowledge management, enterprise portals, new media publishing and electronic commerce applications. Because of its ability to analyse any piece of text (independent of the document's language) and identify and rank the main ideas therein, Autonomy can automate a broad range of labour-intensive tasks. These range from categorising information by subject matter, to inserting hypertext links to related material, to profiling users based on the ideas in the text they read or write, to delivering information to those most likely to be interested.
Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices in San Francisco, New York, Atlanta and Boston, in the United States as well as in Cambridge (England), Paris, Oslo, Stockholm, Sydney, Frankfurt, Munich, Milan, Brussels and Amsterdam. Among its 200 customers are Alcatel, British Aerospace, News Corp., Tesco, Burda, Elsevier, Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, TF1, BBC, Reuters, The Royal Mail, the US Army, the US Navy and NASA. In addition, many software companies are licensing Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their own products, in areas as diverse as online publishing, knowledge management, email routing, and document management. These include Vignette, Sybase, Corechange, Brio, Delano, E.piphany,Filenet, Hyperwave, Insight, Intranet Solutions, Intraspect, KnowledgeTrack, Nexor, Novient and OpenMarket.
In July 1998, the company went public on the EASDAQ exchange (EASDAQ: AUTN). It floated on NASDAQ (NASDAQ: AUTN) in May 2000.
