C-SPAN and Virage Launch Wireless Presidential Debate Video Search Engine

Virage Extends Its Video Application Platform to Include Wireless Video Information Delivery

SAN MATEO, CA - October 3, 2000 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of software products and application services that enable video for the Internet, today announced that it has teamed with C-SPAN to bring television coverage of the Campaign 2000 presidential debates to the Internet and to handheld wireless PDAs. Starting with the October 3rd debate, Virage will deliver, for the first time ever, its rich index of the video information directly to wireless PDAs, such as the Palm V or Palm VII. Virage and C-SPAN will also publish Virage-enabled video of debate coverage onto C-SPAN.org and the over 35 Internet destination sites currently syndicating the Virage Campaign 2000 Video Search Engine.

Starting with the first presidential debate, users of Palm V or Palm VII devices with wireless Internet access will be able to remotely receive and navigate key information extracted from the televised coverage of the debates and other campaign events. Wireless PDA users will be able to search by candidate, party, state or any keyword and quickly get to the appropriate segment from the video stream. Mobile users can then review the complete text transcript or browse still image representations of the video.

The new wireless delivery system demonstrates the power and extensibility of the Virage SmartEncode™ process and the Virage Video Application Platform. Virage video allows content owners, like C-SPAN, to deliver on-demand video as information, across a variety of media, scaled to the bandwidth appropriate for the target device.

"We are very pleased to continue our partnership with Virage to deliver pertinent and timely information to voters nationwide," said Robert Kennedy, C-SPAN executive vice president. "The special Debate Search Engine, along with the addition of wireless access to the Campaign 2000 Video Search Engine, are important steps forward in our effort to increase the accessibility and usefulness of C-SPAN's online content. We are especially excited about the long-term educational potential for the searchable debate archive."

"C-SPAN continues to find new and creative ways to provide unfiltered access to political dialog and debate," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "We are pleased to be using the debate coverage to demonstrate a new paradigm for video content and information distribution via wireless PDAs. By making video information available from anywhere, at anytime, our latest extension of the Virage platform further demonstrates the powerful role that the Internet can play in the democratization of information."

Users of a Palm V or Palm VII with wireless Internet access can download the campaign search application by visiting: www.virage.com/palm2k
