MedSpecialists and Verity Team to Provide "Anywhere, Anytime" Information Access to Medical Specialists via ASP-Provided Applications
Verity K2 Toolkit™ Offers Rapid, Scalable and Precise Access to Critical Information and Clinical Applications Needed to Deliver High-Quality Health Care in a Time- and Cost-Effective Manner
SUNNYVALE, Calif. and CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - 2000-09-25 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, and MedSpecialists, Inc., an e-health company focused on serving the clinical needs of medical specialists through the Internet, today announced that MedSpecialists has selected Verity's high-performance Verity K2 Toolkit portal infrastructure technology, with advanced search, navigate and view capabilities, to power its leading-edge family of secure, specialty-specific portals. MedSpecialists will offer a family of portals for specialty physicians that integrate clinical applications with productivity tools and medical content on an FDA-compliant Internet Applications Services Provider. Also announced today, MedSpecialists launched its first portal, targeted toward neurosurgery specialists, (see related announcement entitled "Medspecialists, Inc. Launches NEUROSURGERYSTAT").
Medical specialists, including neurosurgeons, cardiologists, and radiologists, are highly mobile individuals with a diverse set of clinical information and application needs. Historically, they have had to rely on a variety of manual and computerized systems for medical decision-making and patient care. These systems are often isolated and neglect specialty workflow requirements, which creates tremendous practice inefficiencies that result in added costs, compromised care, lost billing opportunities and time-consuming administrative tasks. According to Michael L. Kappel, chief executive officer of MedSpecialists, "We're addressing these challenges by integrating the necessary functionality to make the overall solution an asset to medical specialists. As we ramp up and continue to add new portals and services, a critical requirement is to partner with a company that has the technology to scale with us and that provides tight integration with the other Java modules we're using, including BEA's WebLogic. As a leader in portal infrastructure technology, with high performance, scalability, and flexibility in search, navigation and viewing, Verity was the logical choice. Use of Verity's spidering technology will enable our users to search many portals and servers at once, saving our users valuable time."
"MedSpecialists is providing an invaluable service to both medical specialists and patients alike," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, president of Verity, Inc. "By providing 'anywhere, anytime' access to critical information, they are enabling specialists to more conveniently and cost-effectively deliver the highest quality care for their patients, while competently managing their growing practices. We're proud to be able to contribute our expertise in portal infrastructure technology to MedSpecialists. Their medical specialists will have around-the-clock access to precise information they need to do their, literally, life-saving jobs, securely and instantaneously."
Medical specialists represent about 75 percent of more than 797,000 U.S. physicians and play a particularly valuable role in the healthcare continuum because of their expert knowledge and the economic impact of their care. On an annual basis, these specialists conduct more than 1.1 billion office visits, perform more than 150 million medical procedures and generate over $212 billion in billable revenues.
MedSpecialists' Web-based solution may deliver tangible improvements in the areas of access to clinical care tools, reducing administrative costs, and improving the productivity and quality of the physicians' professional lives. Additional benefits to specialists may include improved competitiveness, increased revenue opportunities, reduced cost of ownership and expanded continuing medical education (CME) and clinical information access.
About the Verity K2 Toolkit
Verity K2 Toolkit allows brokered search across multiple servers and multiple CPUs to provide the most relevant search results from many information sources without sacrificing the speed or accuracy of the results displayed. As the number of users, queries, or amount of data increases, K2 applications can keep pace with increased demands by adding new CPUs or servers to the network without bringing down the application. Providing 24x7 fault-tolerant operations, the Verity K2 Toolkit isolates failures of individual nodes or servers from the rest of the system, ensuring that applications are available when they are needed.
The Verity K2 Toolkit also supports Active Server Pages/COM and Java™, allowing easy integration across a wide range of application servers and Java environments, including Microsoft IIS/Site Server, Weblogic, iPlanet, Websphere, Java Server Pages, and Apache with Jserv. With Industry-standard C language and Perl APIs, Verity's K2 Toolkit helps speed application deployment and gives corporate accounts added flexibility in application development, especially for e-commerce and business-to-business application solutions.
