Sony to Integrate Virage Products into Its Broadcast System Solutions

Leading Broadcast System Provider Joins Virage Developer Program

IBC 2000 CONFERENCE, AMSTERDAM - September 9, 2000 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of software products and application services that enable video for the Internet, today announced that Sony Broadcast and Professional Company will integrate Virage products into Sony's solution offerings. As part of its overall Asset Management strategy, Sony is relying on Virage to supply key components of its high-resolution video framework specifically for the broadcast market.

As one of the most advanced video production facilities in the United States, MS Studios manages an archive of over one million digital assets with 50,000 to 80,000 new items added every month. With everything from infomercials to keynote speeches on file, MS Studios serves both as a state-of-the-art production facility as well as a strategic corporate resource and repository. Serving Microsoft's internal media needs ranging from strategic research to training, legal archiving and production, MS Studios personnel will count on Virage metadata to quickly find the video content they need, thereby unlocking a valuable corporate resource.

Sony, one of the world's most respected broadcast system providers, joins a host of premier development partners, including leading asset management vendors and world-class system integrators, that leverage the Virage VideoLogger™ and its associated development tools and platform features to enable intelligent handling of video content. "This collaboration between two leaders in their respective fields promises to break new ground in the area of all-digital television production," said Kevin Ivey, vice president of research and development at CNN, Inc. "Virage's cutting-edge software platform is the right match for Sony's breadth of solutions and integration experience. Beside the strong working relationship we've enjoyed with both companies, this agreement should greatly extend the reach of Virage-enabled video into all parts of the television broadcast process, facilitating the management and repurposing of video content."

"The integration of Virage technology into our overall solution is a key strategic initiative for us," said Bradley Kerth, Engineering Project Manager at Sony. "Virage software products have become critical elements in the workflow for video management and we are excited to provide a complete system that includes them."

"Sony's efforts to produce a media framework for high resolution video indexing, storage, and management are an excellent fit with the Virage open architecture," said Carlos Montalvo, vice president of marketing at Virage. "The integration of the Virage platform and associated products, like VideoLogger, into its system allows Sony to intelligently handle high-value content for their customers."

In order to facilitate the integration of the two companies' technologies, Sony has recently joined the rapidly growing Virage Developer Program.

"Since time-to- market is a critical factor in the rapidly moving video management area, we are relying on Virage and its popular Developer Program to create a complete solution.," continued Kerth, "We found the Virage SDK and the associated support program to be a complete set of tools that allowed our engineering staff to rapidly integrate Sony and Virage software components."
