Microsoft Studios Turn to Virage to Deploy Strategic Video Assets Across the Corporate Intranet

One of the World's Most Advanced Video Production Facilities Uses the Virage SmartEncode Process to Unlock Thousands of Hours of Strategic Corporate Video

SAN MATEO, California - Sept. 7, 2000 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of software products and application services that enable video for the Internet, today announced that Microsoft Studios, Microsoft's internal media production and archive group, has selected the Virage platform to index and organize their vast collection of digital media. In response to a growing need for access to video information, Microsoft Studios has selected the Virage Video Application Platform to enhance its ability to locate, produce and reuse video content. Microsoft will rely on the Virage SmartEncode™ process, managed by the Virage VideoLogger®, to prepare video content for a sophisticated archive system. Microsoft is also using the Virage Video Application Server to quickly access video content via its corporate intranet.

As one of the most advanced video production facilities in the United States, MS Studios manages an archive of over one million digital assets with 50,000 to 80,000 new items added every month. With everything from infomercials to keynote speeches on file, MS Studios serves both as a state-of-the-art production facility as well as a strategic corporate resource and repository. Serving Microsoft's internal media needs ranging from strategic research to training, legal archiving and production, MS Studios personnel will count on Virage metadata to quickly find the video content they need, thereby unlocking a valuable corporate resource.

"Like any large corporation, Microsoft needs to get maximum value from the increasing amount of video it generates," said John Parker, senior analyst at Aberdeen Group. "The Virage/Microsoft relationship is significant for both companies: It gives Microsoft the edge by transforming video into easily managed information, while providing another good example of how Virage adds strategic value in the corporate environment."

"The use of video as a major corporate decision making and communication tool is increasing at an amazing rate," said Kevin Comerford, manager of Microsoft Studios. "Organizations who do not take advantage of the content they already produce, not to mention new video opportunities like webcasting, are at a significant disadvantage. The Virage system, which has a year or two lead over its competitors, provides a very cost-effective way to maximize the value of the video we produce and acquire. In many ways, it's like going from shuffling through mountains of paper in filing cabinets to a search engine, you never go back unless forced to. For instance, the ability to automatically read and make searchable the text from PowerPoint presentations is amazing. Overall, the Virage software allows us to provide much better service to Microsoft employees worldwide."

"Microsoft is leader in using advanced media types to gain strategic advantage," said Carlos Montalvo, vice president of marketing at Virage. "We are excited to be working with MS Studios to enhance their production and use of video content. Being able to quickly locate the video content you need, whether it be for use in training, competitive research, internal communications or external marketing purposes, is increasingly becoming an important strategic weapon in the enterprise."
