Stanford University's HighWire Press and Verity Team Up Again To Deliver Oxford English Dictionary Web Site

Verity K2 Toolkit Helps OED Users Find Information Quickly and Easily

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2000-08-07 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, today announced that HighWire Press, the Internet Imprint of the Stanford University Libraries, has once again selected Verity to provide the K2 high performance portal infrastructure in support of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Web site (www.oed.com), which was launched in March. HighWire began using Verity's proven technology in 1996. It selected Verity K2 Toolkit last fall to enable customers to quickly and easily access information across more than 700,000 technical and scientific journal articles online. The success of K2 in HighWire's original undertaking made it the obvious solution to power OED Online.

"With over one million documents representing all the materials of the 20-volume Second Edition (1989), our goal was to make the OED much more accessible, with more precise results than most Internet search engines," said John Sack, director of Stanford's HighWire. "Our customers expect to find exactly what they want - nothing more, nothing less. Having had previous experience and excellent results with Verity technology, we knew that its precision, speed, relevant results and scalability would enable it to keep pace with the rapidly-growing and changing OED information."

The Oxford English Dictionary is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books. The OED covers words from across the English-speaking world, from North America to South Africa, from Australia and New Zealand to the Caribbean. It also offers the best in etymological analysis, listings of variant spellings, and shows pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet. The launch of OED Online marked a significant milestone in the history of "the world's greatest dictionary."

According to Anthony Bettencourt, president of Verity, "HighWire and Oxford University Press are performing an incredible service. Online publication of the Oxford English Dictionary enables the ‘treasure-house' of the English language to move with the times as never before. For the first time since it was completed in 1928, the OED is being completely revised - every word and every sense is being fully updated to take into account the latest changes in language and scholarship. We're very honored that Verity K2 was selected to allow OED users to search over 20 volumes of information with speed and ease."

Oxford's OED site enables users to search both the new and the unrevised texts, switching between them at will, to compare the treatment of English in different versions of the OED. In addition, Oxford's goal is that online publication will stimulate intensive scholarly debate on the language, and that communication with the wider scholarly community will result in additional improvements being suggested - whether in terms of definitions, etymology, or the extensive documentation of English usage which the Dictionary provides.

About Verity K2 Toolkit

Verity K2 Toolkit provides a powerful infrastructure for the development of corporate, e-commerce and B2B portals. Verity K2 Toolkit allows brokered search across multiple servers and multiple CPUs to provide the most relevant search results from many information sources without sacrificing the speed or accuracy of the results displayed. As the number of users, queries, or amount of data increases, K2 applications can keep pace with increased demands by adding new CPUs or servers to the network without bringing down the application. Providing 24x7 fault tolerant operations, the Verity K2 Toolkit isolates failures of individual nodes or servers from the rest of the system, ensuring that applications are available when they are needed.

The Verity K2 Toolkit supports tight integration with both COM and Java‘object models, allowing easy integration across a wide range of application servers and Java‘ environments. With industry-standard C language APIs, Verity's K2 Toolkit helps speed portal application deployment and gives customers added flexibility in application development, especially for e-commerce and business-to-business application solutions.

About HighWire Press

Stanford University Library's HighWire Press began in early 1995 with the online production of the weekly Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), the most highly cited (and second largest) peer-reviewed journal. Scientists and societies rapidly saw the potential for new forms and features of scientific communication, and Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences soon joined JBC online.

HighWire now (June 2000) produces 210 sites online, with many more planned. HighWire enjoys the strong support of the University's President, Provost, and Deans of Medicine and Research. HighWire is organizationally a department within Stanford, much as the Stanford University Press is. Indeed, many think of HighWire as the Silicon Valley realization of a university press in the new millennium.
